Saint John the Baptist (San Giovanni Battista), to whom this church was dedicated, is - like Saint Joseph - a man on the threshold from the Old to the New Testament. His parents are Zacharias and Elisabeth. After the announcement of God's incarnation, the Mother of God visits her relative Elisabeth, who will give birth to a son in her old age, John the Baptist. He is half a year older than Jesus and is considered his forerunner/pioneer. He lives in the desert, preaches repentance from sins to the Jewish population and baptizes them in the Jordan. Jesus also comes there to be baptized, and is filled with the Holy Spirit who descends on him from heaven. The feast day of San Giovanni Battista in the saints' calendar is on June 24th, exactly half a year before 'Holy Eve'.

The villa was built between 1676 and 1678 by Cardinal Flavio Chigi on a project by the architect Carlo Fontana, a pupil of Bernini, on the occasion of the election to the papal throne of his uncle Fabio Chigi, with the name of Alexander VII. The building was not conceived as a place of representation, but rather as a secluded residence, where the Chigi could retire for short periods of rest. However, the landscaping of its vast gardens, a forerunner of French taste in Italy, were reproduced in views, conceived to be exhibited in other Chigi residences, to spread the new way.

Among the pleasant and round hills of the Montagnola Senese, in the municipality of Sovicille at about 480 meters above sea level. there is the Romitorio di Cetinale, a particular structure in which 12 hermits lived in common caring for the sick and assisting the dying ... Surrounded by marvelous woods of holm oaks and beeches between gentle panoramas and well-kept roads surrounded by dry stone walls and Cinta Senese pigs running around in wide meadows. A landscape that invites contemplation and inner peace, so much so that monasteries abounded here, and as often happened, a hermitage was connected to each monastery, where the brothers led towards the ascent could find the way to perfection, isolating themselves from world. The hermitage of Cetinale is located on a hill and to access it you have to walk up a staircase called the "holy staircase" that is 600 meters long and over 300 stone steps. The monks had particular obligations that united them to the lord of Cetinale such as visiting the chapel of the villa once a month, serving mass and doing works of charity on request. In exchange, when they did not have enough offers, the villa provided them with something to support themselves.
