At first, this is depressing, but at second glance, you can see that new forest is growing all around the dead spruce trees—sycamore maples, birches, black alder, and many others, with carpets of wildflowers: Himalayan balsam, cabbage thistle, wild geese, meadowsweet, red bentgrass, narrow-leaved willowherb, and others.
