Silberteich on the Nature Myths Trail (HWN 148)

Highlight • Lake

The fire pit, the silver pond and the nature myths trail are absolutely worth seeing, lovingly and imaginatively laid out. The stamp point for the Harz hiking badge is located just above the pond.

😎The Silberteich is a pond in the Upper Harz that was once created for mining purposes. It is located in the Harz National Park on the upper reaches of the Brunnenbach, which rises south of Königskrug. The artificial body of water, surrounded by forest on all sides, is located about two kilometers west of Braunlage city center.
The silver pond was originally called “Brunnenbacher Teich” or “Andreasberger Teich”. It was built in the middle of the 18th century. It served to supply water to the ore mines in the nearby Oder valley.
In December 1760, the pond dam, which had only recently been completed, broke, which resulted in the destruction of the Brunnenbachsmühle downstream. This accident claimed several lives at the time. The dam was then rebuilt, which is why the people in the area referred to the resulting backwater as the “New Pond” for a long time afterwards.
Today a hiking trail leads over the approximately 90 meter long and approximately 14 meter high pond dam, which connects the Upper Harz towns of Braunlage and St. Andreasberg. The silver pond itself is around 280 meters long and has a maximum width of 70 meters. Large parts of the northwest bank area form a valuable biotope and are not directly accessible.

Brunnenbachweg Stepping Stones

Highlight • Structure

To get to the end of the "Mythos Wald" path, you have to walk over these stones to the other bank. If you don't want the thrill or wet feet, you can bypass the spot by taking a small detour (following the hiking trail directly).

A little surefootedness is required here, but I think the idea of crossing a stream differently than over a bridge is very nice.
When the water is high, things get interesting; )
