The Lookout Peak Trail offers a challenging yet incredibly scenic journey through the Wasatch-Cache National Forest, rewarding you with continuously improving views as you ascend. You'll traverse steep terrain, moving from stream-side sections to exposed, rocky ridgelines, all leading to the expansive summit of Lookout Peak. This difficult 8.3-mile (13.4 km) hike, with its 2762 feet (842 metres) of elevation gain, takes approximately 5 hours and 42 minutes, making it a substantial day out for experienced hikers.
Planning your visit requires a bit of foresight; an early morning start is recommended, especially in summer, due to the trail's lack of shade. You can access the trail from Killyon Canyon, which is a dog-friendly option, or Affleck Park, though dogs are not permitted there. The south and west-facing slopes mean this trail often clears of snow earlier in spring and stays accessible later into fall than many other high-elevation routes.
What makes this trail stand out is its sense of solitude despite being so close to Salt Lake City, offering a quieter alternative to more crowded peaks. From the ridgeline and summit, you'll be treated to widespread views of the Salt Lake Valley, various canyons, and distant mountain ranges like the Uintas. It's an underrated gem for those seeking a strenuous hike with big payoffs in panoramic vistas.
