    Hiking

This trail is actually an old forest service road, popular with hikers, mountain bikers and (by winter) skiers and snowshoers alike. It's also part of the original trail trod by early Mormons on their way to the Salt Lake Valley.

Note: Dogs are not allowed on this section of trail due to the nearby watershed. You can hike with dogs on the section that runs from Mormon Flat to Big Mountain Pass.

Embark on a journey through history and challenging terrain on the Donner Reed Party and Mormon Pioneer Trail, a difficult 11.3-mile (18.2 km) hike that climbs 1721 feet (525 metres) over approximately 5 hours and 20 minutes. The route guides you through the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, starting near Little Dell Reservoir and ascending towards Big Mountain Pass. You'll traverse diverse landscapes, from lower elevation sagebrush to dense pine and aspen forests, with the path becoming progressively steeper on switchbacks as you gain elevation, offering rewarding panoramic views.

When planning your hike, be aware that some sections of the Mormon Pioneer Trail pass through watershed areas where pets may not be permitted. While specific trailhead parking isn't detailed for this exact route, the trail is generally well-maintained. For the most scenic experience, consider hiking in spring or summer to witness abundant wildflowers, or in the fall for spectacular foliage, especially in the East Canyon area.

This trail holds profound historical significance, tracing segments of the routes taken by both the ill-fated Donner-Reed Party and the resilient Mormon pioneers. It offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the immense hardships and perseverance of early settlers who navigated these very paths. The trail is part of the larger National Historic Trail system, connecting you directly to a pivotal chapter of American westward expansion.
