Tips from the Community

Sue
December 23, 2024, Mooney Trail No.12

The Mooney Trail begins as a wide pathway that follows a cattle trail, winding along the beautiful boundary of the Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness. As you ascend, the route gradually narrows into an easy-to-follow rock path, offering stunning views of Sycamore Canyon and Casner Mountain. There is limited shade on the slopes of the canyon, although you can find some shade along the riparian section of the trail, so be sure to bring plenty of water.

This junction marks the end of Mooney Trail, providing two loop options for an extended hike. The Casner Mountain Trail adds 2 km to your hike, or if you're looking to extend your adventure significantly, the Cabin Taylor Trail offers an option for a larger loop, adding 15 km to your journey. Both trails loop back to Forest Road 525c, allowing you to return to the trailhead.

This trailhead has a pass-through gate leading to the beginning of a long uphill exploration of Mooney Canyon. Black Tank is situated here, which has some interesting old rusty equipment and a former pump house.

Lower Goldwater Lake used to be inaccessible, but in 2024 expansion of access with a new Ramada for parties, restrooms, parking and a trail going around the lake have now made it another beautiful nature spot near Prescott, Arizona.
