Dülken's Historic Mile 🚩 In the middle of Dülken's Historic Mile stands a real character made of stone: the Prison Tower. As the only round tower of the medieval town fortifications, it guards a strategically important corner of the wall and makes it clear with its shape that no ordinary watchtower served here. Once, loopholes looked out in all directions, and in case of emergency, a particularly strong garrison moved in – the tower, in a way, played in the top league of the city's defense. Its name is not without reason: The lower floor once hid a dungeon, where military prisoners were held at times. Chains, locks, and iron shackles were part of the equipment back then – it was definitely not cozy. Today, the tower appears much more peaceful. Although a large part has been reconstructed, original wall remnants still tell of sieges, ramparts, and heavy hook guns. Thus, the Prison Tower combines exciting city history with a good dose of medieval flair – all without a stay in the dungeon.

Dülken's Historic Mile 🚩 Anyone strolling through Dülken can hardly miss St. Cornelius – and it's not just because of its central location. The mighty Neo-Gothic church has shaped the cityscape for over 100 years and seems almost surprisingly large for a former small town. In fact, it remains the largest parish church in the Diocese of Aachen to this day. With its artfully decorated brick facade, sandstone details, and distinctive bell tower, it likes to show off its best side. Yet, behind its walls lies a turbulent history: predecessor buildings, town fires, a hurricane that once carried away the spire, war damage, and several renovations have left their mark. The impressive structure was designed by the renowned Cologne architect Heinrich Wiethase, who left Dülken a true landmark. Standing in front of the church, you quickly realize: this wasn't a half-hearted effort, but a grand undertaking – as if Dülken had secretly treated itself to a small cathedral.

A quick trip to the tourist information point to use the restroom...no problem, because the place is well-run and lined with various local animals. Just go in and enjoy everything it has to offer. The staff is friendly, too. It's worth 5 stars for me.
