Mattia
August 3, 2026, Fortificazioni del Gran Serin

The Forte del Gran Serin or Batteria del Gran Serin is a fortification built towards the end of the 19th century to defend the northwestern borders, located along the Assietta road near the Colle dell'Assietta. The battery develops in length straddling over 2,600 meters in altitude, offering artillery positions, barracks including stables for a total that could reach 850 soldiers and a powder magazine, all protected by a long wall. The position covered with its fire from the top of the Assietta to the Gran Costa mountain, covering the Galambra valley, the Niblè, the Quattro Denti peak and the lower Val Cenischia. To date, the structure is in ruins and part of the wall is missing.

Overshadowed by the fame of its abbey, Novalesa risks flying under the radar. However, its historic center is very interesting. Consisting essentially of a double row of houses surrounding the central street (the town's former main thoroughfare), its main attraction is the church (with its striking neoclassical façade, free of a single curve). But it's all worth exploring, from the beautiful fountain at the entrance to the narrow alleys that branch off between the stone houses. It's worth wandering through and fully enjoying.

In a very compact area, Venaus offers a remarkable number of interesting churches and chapels, some with beautiful frescoes, and several exquisitely crafted fountains, not only beautiful to look at but also providing drinking water. Walking through the town center is a wonderful experience.

A fiberglass sculpture reminiscent of the "good old days," when children had to learn the ropes from an early age. Very well made, it's worth a look.

On the north side of medieval Bussoleno, between the town and the Dora River, a section of the original dry-stone city wall remains, complete with a beautiful defensive tower. It's historically interesting and scenically beautiful, with the Dora River and the mountains in the background. If you visit medieval Bussoleno, which is as small as a handkerchief, you're almost forced to end up here. The city wall and tower are also clearly visible from the bridge over the Dora River.
