On EuroVelo 13, cyclists can follow the "Iron Curtain", the border that divided Europe into East and West for almost half a century during the Cold War. The route, which is over 10,600 km long, offers a vivid history lesson and reminds us that peace and reconciliation are more important than ever today. As one of the longest EuroVelo routes, it has something for everyone: foodies will love the vineyards of southern Bohemia and northern Austria, nature lovers can enjoy the pristine nature and wildlife in the former border no-man's-land, while culture enthusiasts can look forward to the bustling Baltic port cities and vibrant capitals such as Bratislava and Riga. https://de.eurovelo.com/ev13

The churchyard church of St. Salvator von Eisfeld was built in 1542. When the city built a new municipal cemetery in 1873 and a new cemetery chapel in 1901, it was preserved as a ruin after protests. The scholar and reformer Justus Jonas, who died in 1555, was buried in the cemetery. During the remodeling of the churchyard church in 1661, his grave was placed under the interior staircase leading to the top gallery. An epitaph from 1565, located above the round-arched west door, commemorates him.

The school building, dating from 1575, is the second oldest school building in Thuringia. The ground floor is constructed of sandstone with two round-arched portals. A half-timbered upper story was built above it. The stone "school man" on the eastern corner of the "Old School" is interpreted in folklore as a treasure finder and founder of the school building.

The Schaumburg Domain near Schalkau in Thuringia The Schaumburg Domain near Schalkau in Thuringia looks back on a long history, even if few visible traces remain today. Originally, the Schaumburg was a medieval hilltop castle, probably built as early as the 12th century. It served to secure the trade route and control the surrounding area. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times and was remodeled and expanded. Over time, however, it lost its military significance and was partially destroyed during the Peasants' War (1524/25). Later, a manor, the so-called Schaumburg Domain, was built on the site of the former castle complex. At that time, a domain usually referred to a large agricultural holding, often owned by the state or a royal house, whose income flowed directly into the state treasury or was used to support the estate.
