The town of Hannberg played a strategic role as early as the 11th century due to its location on the trade route between Bamberg, Würzburg and the royal estates in Büchenbach and Herzogenaurach. Hannberg was first mentioned in a document in 1065 under the name "Hagenberch" in a gift certificate from the Bishop of Bamberg.
