Giessenbach Gorge

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

The Gießenbachklamm is an easy going gorge. There are a few steps (just under 100) until you're up, so unfortunately not suitable for strollers. Otherwise very suitable for children.
No danger spots and entertaining. No entry.

I made the climb at 5am with 15cm of fresh snow, the hiking trail is very well signposted but also challenging, I think it doesn't matter whether there is snow or not, it goes over steps and a small stream. From the bridge in front of the waterfall you have a great view of it. On one side of the bridge you can get to the waterfall basin.

A beautiful waterfall that you can swim in. It's worth going there early in the morning in summer when it's quieter... 😉

Very high waterfall that can be reached via rooty paths through the forest. A narrow path leads around it, so that you can also admire it from behind. Unique!

A beautiful waterfall, in an idyllic location. The way there is almost entirely through forest, pretty flat. Partly along the Prien River.

What is the difference between a waterfall and a gorge in this region?

In the Rettenschöss area, a waterfall typically refers to a single, distinct drop of water, like the high Schossrinn Waterfall or Lochner Falls. A gorge, such as the Giessenbach Gorge or Entenloch Gorge, is a narrow valley with steep, rocky sides, often carved by a river, and may feature multiple smaller cascades and rapids along its course rather than one large waterfall.

What do visitors enjoy most about the waterfalls around Rettenschöss?

Visitors frequently highlight the natural beauty and tranquility. They appreciate the crystal-clear waters, the unique experience of walking behind the Schossrinn Waterfall, and the refreshing atmosphere of places like Lochner Falls. The easy accessibility of some spots and the opportunity to linger and recharge are also highly valued.

Are there any smaller or less-known waterfalls to explore?

Is the Entenloch Gorge considered a waterfall attraction?

The Entenloch Gorge, located on the Bavarian-Tyrolean border, is primarily a significant natural gorge carved by the Großache river. While it features cascades and rapids due to the river cutting through steep rocks, it's known more for its impressive geological formations, two suspension bridges, and a viewing platform rather than a single, named waterfall. It's a popular spot for scenic walks.

What is the best time to visit the waterfalls in the Rettenschöss region?

The waterfalls and gorges can be enjoyed throughout much of the year. Spring brings lush greenery and increased water flow from snowmelt, while summer offers refreshing cool air and opportunities for bathing at spots like Lochner Falls. Autumn provides beautiful foliage. Even in winter, some paths are accessible, though conditions might be more challenging due to ice or snow, as noted for viewpoints in the area.
