Tips from the Community

Matthew
October 7, 2023, Bajada Trail

The Bajada Trail is one of the easier trails in the preserve. It still has the normal rocks and sand that you find on desert trails, but it's generally mild grades when it goes uphill and downhill. Likewise, you can hop on the paved service road that runs parallel to the trail if you want some faster running.

October 7, 2023, T-Bone Ridgeline

The T-bone Ridgeline is a mountain spine in the South Mountain Preserve with a singletrack trail following along the ridge. This is a cool trail running trail, but it's super steep in spots, so it's best if you have some trail running experience before going after this one. The views from the ridgeline are unobstructed and worth the effort.

October 7, 2023, Alta Trail

Known for having rockier switchbacks than a lot of the trails in the preserve, Alta Trail sees less bike traffic than many of the other good running trails in the park. This is a tough, technical trail for running, but the continuous views along the ridge make it worth it.

The National Trail is the most heavily trafficked trail in South Mountain Preserve. At the same time, most people don't do the whole trail straight through in one go. This section is popular for connecting other trails in the preserve to each other. It's a fairly smooth trail that's completely runnable.

This overlook is at the intersection of the National Trail and Telegraph Pass Trail. You get a great view of the Gila River Valley from up here, but you do have to share the overlook with some car traffic. Most of the trails in the preserve are open to cyclists, but this can be a tricky uphill trail for riders. That being said, keep your eyes peeled because bikes get to moving on the downhill.
