Normannslepene is the name of a network of old east-west routes across the Hardangervidda. One of them, Store Normannslepa, runs through the Hjølmadal valley. *
Travel along these routes was largely used to drive cattle for trade. The farmers of Eidfjord bought cattle, horses, sheep, and goats, drove them up the Hardangervidda, and then on to the markets in Eastern Norway, where they were sold. Up to 500 animals could be driven across the moors at a time. The last of them left Eidfjord in 1918.
