On October 3, 2010, the "Alter Friedhof" park was ceremoniously renamed Vittinghoff-Schell Park. With this dedication, the municipality honors a highly distinguished local and federal politician.
Baron von Vittinghoff-Schell was born on October 3, 1910, at Haus Kalbeck near Weeze. After graduating from the Collegium Augustinianum Gaesdonck in 1928, he studied law and modern languages in Munich, Fribourg, and Cologne. Immediately after receiving his doctorate in law at the end of 1933, he joined the management of his parents' family estate.

In the 1950s, Vittinghoff-Schell also assumed responsibility in the Regional Assembly of the Rhineland Regional Association (1953-1961) and on the board of the Niersverband (1957-1982).
His skills, language skills, and international contacts, as well as his commitment to democratic consensus and compromise, also made him a prominent figure beyond the region. As a direct candidate for the CDU, he served in the German Bundestag from 1961 to 1969 and was a member of the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe and the Assembly of the Western European Union (1965-1969).
