In the Basilica of Saint Martin in Halle, you will find a small, dark statue of Mary that has attracted pilgrims since 1267: the Black Madonna. A striking detail: the statue was not donated to the church, but to the city, a political gesture by the Counts of Hainaut. Whether she is black because of candle soot or because she has always been black, remains a subject of debate, but she certainly makes an impression. So go inside!
