The picturesque village of Zammelen, a part of Kortessem, lies on the edge of the Haspengouw loess plateau and in the valley of the winding Mombeek. A combination of water, clay, limestone, and sand in the soil creates a nature reserve with varied meadows, typical hayfields, mysterious marshes, and bog woods. These different landscapes exert a special attraction on rare plant and animal species. Zammelen is wet Haspengouw at its finest.

The eye-catcher of this farm is, in my opinion, the Gothic gatehouse. It has a lower section of marlstone, the upper section is brick from a more recent period. The pointed arch entrance gate has a frame of limestone blocks. In the passageway is the door to the house on the right side. The first floor of marlstone has been preserved in the street facade of the house.

Beekvallei Herkwinning is a mosaic of meadows, roughs and fen forests that winds between agricultural areas. Because locally calcareous seepage - a type of groundwater - emerges, you will find various valuable vegetation types here. For example, a marsh marigold grassland develops on the annually mown areas. Many roughs also develop into large sedge vegetations, meadowsweet roughs or reed beds.

Mistletoe is a semi-parasitic plant that lives on living wood and roots in the wood of its host, for which it depends on water and salts. The berry-like fruit is dispersed by birds. The berries are consumed in the axil of a tree branch; the seed sticks and germinates. The root then grows into the tree. Seeds are not digested and have a sticky coating, hence the name "birdlime." The seeds are poisonous to humans.

The name Mombeek comes from Molenbeek. So, quite a few watermills once stood along this stream, which was only 23 kilometers longβor short. There were no fewer than 13 in total. Nearby, you'd find the Luimertingen Mill, the Bombroek Mill, the Root Mill, and the Wimmertingen Mill, among others. Some are still heritage sites. The (former) course of the Mombeek forms the border between Diepenbeek and Kortessem. Source: Natuurpunt information board

The Mombeek stream flows through the nature reserve. It rises in the Tongeren district of Widooie and flows into the Herk stream in Sint-Lambrechts-Herk. The distance between its source and mouth is approximately 23 km. In recent years, several nature reserves have been established in the Mombeek valley, the largest of which is Nietelbroeken. The stream valley consists of meadows, marshes, swamp forests, and scrub. (Natuurpunt)
