Hiking
The Mombeek stream flows through the nature reserve. It rises in the Tongeren district of Widooie and flows into the Herk stream in Sint-Lambrechts-Herk. The distance between its source and mouth is approximately 23 km.
In recent years, several nature reserves have been established in the Mombeek valley, the largest of which is Nietelbroeken. The stream valley consists of meadows, marshes, swamp forests, and scrub.

Hiking
The name Mombeek comes from Molenbeek. So, quite a few watermills once stood along this stream, which was only 23 kilometers long—or short. There were no fewer than 13 in total. Nearby, you'd find the Luimertingen Mill, the Bombroek Mill, the Root Mill, and the Wimmertingen Mill, among others. Some are still heritage sites.
The (former) course of the Mombeek forms the border between Diepenbeek and Kortessem.
