May 3, 2026, Wooden Bridge Over the Mombeek

The Mombeek flows via Zammelen, Wintershoven, Vliermaalroot and Wimmertingen to Sint-Lambrechts-Herk, where it flows into the Herk after approximately 23 km. The Mombeek fed numerous watermills, such as the Croesmolen in Vliermaal, the Wintershovenmolen near the Desseneer farm in Wintershoven, the Rootmolen in Vliermaalroot, the Bombroekmolen (no longer on the Mombeek due to the relocation of the riverbed) in Kortessem, the Luimertingenmolen in Kortessem and the mill near the castle of Mombeek between Rapertingen and Wimmertingen. In total, there were 12 watermills on the Mombeek. The name of the stream is therefore a contraction of Molenbeek. @https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mombeek

In April, it's still quiet in the marina ⚓️. The short promenade along the shore is nice for a stroll and enjoying the maritime flair. We ate very well at Maison Mathis.

The Kanaalkom, formerly known as Kolenhaven, is a former port and industrial area that was redeveloped into a vibrant urban district between 2016 and 2024. Today, known as the Blauwe Boulevard or Quartier Bleu, it comprises 400 luxury apartments and houses with beautiful views of the harbour. The commercial heart is formed by the new shopping centre and the cafés, restaurants, and bars along the waterfront promenade.

Let yourself be touched by the inspiring sculpture, the understated poetry, and the subtle symbolism, which blend beautifully with the tranquility of nature. A place to pause, feel, and come to yourself. You are most welcome.

Around the Sint-Martinus church lies a spacious, walled churchyard that immediately exudes a calm and charming atmosphere. A few striking lime trees provide shade and character, while old grave crosses whisper silent stories from the past. Through the main entrance, beautifully marked by two sturdy limestone pillars, you step into this special piece of heritage. The church itself is a fascinating mix of styles and periods: a 14th or 15th-century Gothic tower, an 18th-century nave, and a transept with a choir from the early 20th century, designed by Mathieu Christiaens. Together, they form a harmonious whole that has effortlessly stood the test of time.

On the site where a manor house stood in the Middle Ages, the castle of Hardelingen was built in the 19th century. The site had continuous habitation from early on and was closely linked for centuries to agricultural exploitation in the fertile valley of the Werm. As a manor house, the domain served not only as a residence but also as an economic center that managed and structured the surrounding land within the traditional agricultural landscape of Haspengouw. Today, the castle of Hardelingen, located in the quiet village of Werm, is a valuable example of the transformation of a medieval manor house into a stately 19th-century country residence. The castle and the surrounding park landscape strikingly illustrate the neoclassical ideals of order, harmony, and scenic beauty, thus occupying a special place in the heritage of Haspengouw.
