An authentic and unmissable refuge where we stopped during our mountain bike crossing of the Assietta with my friend. Two incredible days filled with the beauty of the surroundings and exceptional autumn light. One night at 2500m altitude at the Casa Assietta refuge, where we were welcomed like royalty by Roberto! A good night's sleep under the covers after the host had prepared an excellent dinner for us! Thank you, Roberto!

The Susa Valley offers a diverse landscape for gravel biking, characterized by mountainous terrain and varied elevations. You'll primarily encounter old military roads, known as 'Vie Storiche di Montagna,' which provide compact surfaces ideal for gravel bikes. These routes often wind through forests, across high-altitude passes, and past emerald-green meadows, offering a dynamic riding experience with breathtaking views.
Yes, Villar Focchiardo and the surrounding Val Susa are known for challenging routes. For instance, the Colle dell'Assietta – Blegier Pass loop from Grange is a demanding ride. The region also features iconic climbs like Colle delle Finestre and the Strada dell'Assietta, which is recognized as the highest vehicular dirt road in Europe, offering spectacular rides consistently above 2000 meters.
Many routes offer stunning views and pass by significant landmarks. You might encounter the majestic Sacra di San Michele, an ancient abbey perched on Mount Pirchiriano. Other points of interest include the Pera Furà Millstone Cave or the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes. The trails often provide panoramic views of the Susa Valley.
While many routes in this guide are rated as difficult, the Susa Valley does offer options for varying skill levels. For a less strenuous experience, consider routes that stick to lower elevations or explore the areas around Avigliana, which is often considered the gateway to the Susa Valley. Always check the route details for elevation gain and distance to ensure it matches your family's capabilities.
The best time for gravel biking in the Susa Valley is typically from late spring through early autumn (May to October). During these months, the weather is generally more stable, and higher-altitude passes like Colle delle Finestre and Strada dell'Assietta are usually free of snow. Always check local weather conditions before heading out, especially for mountain routes.
Yes, many of the gravel bike trails in the area are designed as loops, allowing you to start and finish at the same point. For example, the Exposed Rock Formation – Lys Pass loop from Sant'Ambrogio offers a substantial circular ride. Another option is the Small Lake of Avigliana – Lago Grande di Avigliana loop, which is also a circular route.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars. Reviewers often praise the challenging climbs, rewarding descents, and the sheer variety of unpaved roads that offer an immersive experience of nature and history. The stunning panoramic views and the sense of adventure on these no-traffic routes are frequently highlighted.
Parking is generally available in and around Villar Focchiardo and the starting points of many routes in the Susa Valley. Larger towns like Avigliana or Sant'Ambrogio, which serve as common starting points, offer more designated parking areas. It's advisable to check specific starting locations for parking availability when planning your ride.
The Susa Valley is accessible by train, with stations in towns like Avigliana and Sant'Ambrogio, which are often starting points for cycling routes. From these towns, you can often connect to the trailheads. However, public transport options directly to more remote trailheads might be limited, so planning your route with train schedules and potential short rides to the start is recommended.
Generally, dogs are allowed on trails in the Val Susa region, especially on less crowded gravel roads. However, it's always best to keep them on a leash, particularly in areas with wildlife or near livestock. Be mindful of other trail users and ensure your dog is well-behaved and doesn't disturb the natural environment. Always carry water for your dog, especially on longer rides.
While many of the no-traffic gravel routes venture into remote mountain areas, you can find cafes, restaurants, and mountain huts (rifugi) in the villages and towns along the Susa Valley. For longer, more isolated routes, it's essential to carry sufficient water and snacks. Some routes, especially those passing through smaller hamlets, might offer limited options, so plan your refueling stops accordingly.
