Do you remember the Bijlmer disaster? On October 4, 1992, an El Al Boeing crashed on the Groeneveen and Kruitberg flats in Amsterdam's Bijlmer. There were many deaths and human suffering was great. The crash also impacted trees in the area. For example, during soil remediation afterwards. Quite a few harmful substances such as kerosene and oil had leaked into the soil. Many trees were removed for the remediation. A gray poplar (Populus x canescens) survived the disaster and also escaped the soil remediation. After the disaster, a meeting place spontaneously developed around this tree. People placed flowers and photos there to commemorate their loved ones. Later the tree became the heart of a memorial monument and it still is. The tree has been named the living monument of the Bijlmer disaster. It is now called 'The tree that saw everything' (BAZ). Gray poplars have a characteristic bark. Even with little imagination you can see 'eyes' in this. Eyes that saw everything. The foundations of the affected flats are now part of the new design of the park. A memorial plaque lists all the names of the victims.
