You can take a look if you're passing by anyway. I wouldn't drive out of my way to see it.

It's worth a look. I wouldn't come here just to see the old prison.

Since Hartum was chosen as the seat of the district administration out of the seven villages (Hartum, Hahlen, Nord- and Südhemmern, Hille, Holzhausen II and Eickhorst), the royal government decided in 1845 that the places that had a policeman, namely Hille and Hartum, should also build a prison. The district administration decided that one prison would be sufficient, and that it would be near the district administration. The plot of land for this was bought from the Röthemeyer family at No. 5, and in 1896 the district prison was built on the current village square. The building is 12.61 m long and 5 m wide. It is equipped with two cells for prisoners, a hallway, a guard room and an equipment room for the fire engine. The masonry is made of field-fired bricks. The small sandstone-framed windows are barred with wrought iron; two remarkable chimneys protrude from the tiled roof. The owl hole in the gable and the frieze decorate the west side. The cells are equipped with a cot, toilet bucket, stove and wash basin. The English used the attic in 1945 as a storage area for 100 stretchers of the wounded. By order of the occupying forces, all villagers had to hand over their weapons, which were collected in the guard room.
