July 17, 2026, Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve

Tidbinbilla is one of those places where the wildlife often steals the show. Kangaroos graze beside the trails, emus wander through the grasslands, and with a bit of patience, you might even spot a platypus or koala. The reserve also plays an important role in protecting several of Australia's threatened native species.

The climb to Gibraltar Peak passes through grassland and forest before reaching one of the best viewpoints in Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. Along the way, interpretive signs share stories of the landscape and its wildlife, while also explaining the peak's deep cultural significance to the Ngunnawal people.

Square Rock is really more a collection of large granite boulders at this summit. There is a step ladder here leading you to a great lookout from the top of the rocks.

Square Rock Track is an accessible route that passes through open grasslands, granite outcrops, and mixed eucalypt forest with some great views of the Ridgeline. It gradually climbs until reaching Square Rock, so pace yourself on the way up and make sure you have enough water.

Here there is a gravel lot with room for several vehicles and trailheads for Square Rock Track and Smoker's South Trail. Keep your eye out for Kangaroos here!

The Kosciuszko Walk climbs from Thredbo through alpine ash forest, snow gum woodland, and open alpine country to the summit of Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest mountain at 2,228 metres. Much of the route follows raised metal boardwalks designed to protect the fragile alpine environment, especially across the exposed high plains above the tree line. In summer, the track is known for alpine wildflowers and wide views across Kosciuszko National Park, while conditions can change quickly with strong wind, snow, and low temperatures possible even outside winter.

Merritts Nature Track climbs steeply from Thredbo Village through snow gum forest and alpine vegetation towards Eagles Nest and the upper section of the Kosciuszko Walk. The route is known for its long stair climbs and steady elevation gain, but the higher you climb, the wider the views become across the Snowy Mountains and surrounding alpine ridgelines. Unlike the elevated metal boardwalks higher up near Mount Kosciuszko, this section feels more rugged and forested underfoot, especially through the lower alpine woodland.

May 12, 2026, Gibraltar Peak

Located in Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, Gibraltar Peak is a popular destination near Australia's capital city. There are multiple approaches to the summit but they all have one thing in common, a steep and grueling ascent to the 1,038 meter high peak. However, the view from the granite tipped summit is outstanding and well worth the effort.
