Beautiful idyll by the river

The large-scale renaturation of the Nidda in the Karben area has freed the river from its historical, artificially straightened concrete and stone corset and transformed it back into a vibrant river landscape. Previously, the Nidda had flowed through the urban area for decades as a structurally poor, perfectly straight canal with steep, massively secured embankments, leading to severe ecological degradation and isolation from the urban space and people. Through extensive construction measures by the city of Karben, several sections were completely redesigned to significantly improve both ecological conditions and flood protection. In the southern section near Klein-Karben, the focus was primarily on nature: the narrow river profile was dissolved, and the Nidda received a new, broadly curved river loop, while the old riverbed was preserved as still and floodwater. This created a new island that now serves as a valuable retreat for reptiles, birds, and amphibians. In addition, the flood levees were set back significantly, creating valuable, extensively used pastures and floodplains in direct connection with the floodplain. In the inner-city section between the retirement home and Dortelweiler Straße, the urban experience was again the focus. The riverbanks were significantly flattened and terraced, giving visitors direct, barrier-free access to the water. A special highlight for recreation here is the Karben Wiesenterrassen (meadow terraces), where wooden decks and seating invite visitors to linger by the river. Integrated into the popular Regionalpark-Niddaroute cycle path network, the project has given the region a truly holiday-like flair, where the river can dynamically regenerate itself with sandbanks, small islands, and natural meanders.

It is a beautiful, albeit narrow, bridge for cyclists and pedestrians.

The historic town hall is a masterpiece of half-timbering. There are different accounts of when it was built. One time it says 1610 and another time 1670. It was probably rebuilt later in the 19th century.
