Lake Otto, which during the GDR era became an "emergency harbor" used by the East German border troops, is now the same as before. During crane season, countless bird spotters arrive with huge lenses on their cameras, probably more than the cranes can come.

The Prerower Strom, Prerow-Strom, or Prerowstrom is a body of water on the Bodden coast of Fischland-Darß-Zingst, which largely separates the Darß from the Zingst peninsula. It begins at the island of Schmidtbülten in the Bodstedter Bodden and winds northwestward from there almost to the (outer) Baltic Sea coast at Prerow Bay. Shortly before its northern end lies the inland port of the eponymous town of Prerow. The Prerower Strom is part of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park.
