A major archaeological feature directly next to the Kastell Zugmantel and the reconstructed Roman tower is the presence of two small Roman amphitheaters. The better-known northern amphitheater is located directly on the Hühnerstraße (B 417) in the area of the former Roman camp (Vicus). The ancient arena had an outer diameter of about 50 meters and was circular in design. It was surrounded by an earth rampart about 13 meters wide, which is still recognizable today in the terrain as a shallow, approximately 1.5-meter-high depression in the forest floor. Excavations by the Reichs-Limeskommission showed that the rampart was secured internally by a retaining wall, which likely served as the foundation for a wooden spectator stand. The arena was primarily used by the Roman troops stationed in the fort (including a partially mounted unit) for military exercises and demonstrations. Furthermore, it served for the entertainment of the soldiers and the civilian population in the camp village, with animal hunts and gladiator fights presumably taking place. Clear evidence of such hunting spectacles is a Roman inscription found on site, which explicitly mentions a local group of imperial hunters (vestigatores). The fact that two such arenas have been documented at Zugmantel – a second one lies east of the camp – underscores the enormous size of the civilian village and the historical significance of this border outpost on the Limes. Both structures are part of the UNESCO World Heritage and are accessible on foot via the archaeological Limes educational trail.

Hessian television (Hessischer Rundfunk) offers in a small TV series titled »Wonders of the World in Hesse« a worthwhile documentary for viewers interested in culture and history about very special sites in the federal state. One episode deals with the LIMES. The website about it states: “The Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a tourist highlight. The approximately 150 km long Hessian section runs from Grebenroth via Saalburg to Seligenstadt am Main. Here history can be experienced as an adventure.” The film (three-quarters of an hour long) can be accessed in the ARD media library at the following link =>> https://www.ardmediathek.de/video/weltwunder-in-hessen/grenzen-des-roemischen-reiches-in-hessen/hr/OTA1NjIyOTctNzIxMS00YjNkLTljNTktZWZmMzllZTc1MjA0

The second Roman amphitheater is located directly behind the Limes, north of the fort. The other amphitheater is located east of the fort, further away and thus presumably also on the eastern edge of the Roman vicus (village).

A funny idea!

The two amphitheaters were initially thought to be fortifications. Many maps still label them as "round ramparts." Only later was the misunderstanding recognized and the structures identified as amphitheaters. Today, only the earthworks remain. Information panels provide a brief insight into their former use and structure.

Very beautiful park, it slopes gently down to the town of Berg. We walked with the kids from the Nerobergbahn cable car. Beautiful trees and beautiful houses.
