April 9, 2026, Eisenacher Stadtschloss

Since 1931, the Stadtschloss (City Palace) on the Markt has housed essential parts of the Thüringer Museum, founded in 1899 and initially located in the Predigerkloster (Monastery of the Preachers). The palace was built between 1741 and 1748 by the master builder Gottfried Heinrich Krohne, but was never used for princely representative purposes, as the Eisenach line of princes died out during this period. Through an exchange with the state of Thuringia, to which the palace had fallen after the revolution of 1918/19, the city came into its possession and initially housed the Curt Elschner Gallery (1925) and then the Thüringer Museum (1931). The museum's main collections include Thuringian porcelain, faience, glass, graphics, wrought iron, genre and landscape painting from the second half of the 19th century, as well as rich ethnographic holdings. A very nice shopping area, a pedestrian zone with many shops, cafés, and restaurants 👍 Here you'll also find a mobile bratwurst stand where you can enjoy a delicious Thuringian bratwurst 😏 My dear Thomas did it, it's really delicious 😋

“If I knew that the world was going to end tomorrow, I would still plant an apple tree today.” Martin Luther is said to have seen divine grace in earthly life in the trees.

Smooth cobblestones have been laid around the old market square and the old town of Schmalkalden. You can also ride along here on a racing bike with narrow tires and find a cafe for a break. The town's main attraction is the large town church of St. George.

An impressive, large church in the small town of Schmalkalden. On the site of the present church, St. Mary's Church stood as a Romanesque predecessor. Its lower section has been preserved as a southwest tower. The tower's window arcades date back to the late 12th century. Due to dilapidation, the tower was demolished down to the second floor in 1434. Construction of St. George's Church began in 1437 and lasted until 1509. The new building was constructed around the Romanesque church. A seam and the Romanesque round arches of the windows in the highest of the three towers still show where the old and new churches were connected. The new church was consecrated by the Bishop of Würzburg in 1500. Source and further information: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stadtkirche_St._Georg_(Schmalkalden)
