You can still find some pretty old buildings and authentic Spanish life here. However, it's a bit more difficult to find a restaurant on Mondays.

The Church (Hermitage) of Santa Eulalia, located in the Santa Eulalia Colony, between Sax and Villena (Alicante, Alto Vinalopó). It forms part of an agricultural colony built in the late 19th century, declared a Site of Cultural Interest (ethnological) in 2016. It is situated in an area between Sax and Villena, near the Acequia del Rey irrigation canal and the Vinalopó River. The hermitage is located in one of the colony's two main squares, surrounded by houses, factories (flour and alcohol), a theater, a casino, and a train station. The current hermitage was built in 1891, on the site of an earlier medieval one, commissioned by the Count of Alcudia (Antonio de Padúa Saavedra). It is a simple rectangular building with a double-arched bell gable built around 1900; each arch housed bells on its lower level.

The Ermita de San Blas in Sax is a small, historic chapel located in the heart of the old town, directly below the castle. It was probably built in the 13th or 14th century and is one of the typical "Ermitas de Reconquista" (reconquest hermitages) built after the Christian reconquest. The building has a simple rectangular floor plan with a later addition of a semicircular chancel and a baroque bell tower above the entrance. The statue of Saint Blas, the patron saint of the town, is venerated inside. The chapel continues to play a central role in the religious and cultural life of Sax. Of particular importance is the annual "Cabildo de San Blas" on December 26th, a traditional gathering that marks the beginning of the patron saint's festivities. In addition, masses are regularly held in honor of the saint. With its historic architecture and picturesque location below the castle, the Ermita de San Blas is an important symbol of Sax's identity and a worthwhile destination for visitors interested in culture.

The dry months, typically from April/May to December, are ideal for gravel biking. During this period, the Laguna de Salinas transforms into a vast, white salt flat, offering a unique riding surface. The rainy season (January to May) fills the lagoon, creating stunning 'water mirrors' but can make some unpaved roads more challenging due to mud or standing water. Be prepared for consistently cold weather and drastic temperature drops at night due to the high altitude.
The terrain primarily consists of unpaved, gravel, and sometimes bumpy dirt roads. You'll encounter high-altitude grasslands (puna), wetlands, and unique Andean forests. Some sections may have deep sand or washboard surfaces. The high elevation, around 4,300 meters (14,107 feet), means challenging climbs and breathtaking views of volcanoes like Misti and Chachani.
While many routes in Laguna De Salinas are rated as moderate to difficult due to the high altitude and challenging terrain, some sections, particularly on the flat salt flats during the dry season, might be suitable for families with older, experienced riders. However, the overall environment requires preparation for altitude and varied surfaces. Always check individual route details for specific difficulty and elevation profiles.
The Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve is rich in Andean wildlife. You can expect to encounter vicuñas, llamas, alpacas, and guanacos. The Laguna de Salinas is also a renowned birdwatching spot, home to all three species of high-Andean flamingos (Andean, Chilean, and James's flamingos), especially during the rainy season, along with Andean geese and crested ducks.
Due to the challenging terrain, including sections of deep sand and washboard, mountain bikes or gravel bikes with wide tires (2.4" or wider) are highly recommended. It's also crucial to prepare for altitude sickness and consistently cold weather with significant temperature drops at night. Layered clothing, sun protection, and plenty of water are essential.

Yes, some routes and tours in the region include visits to natural hot springs, such as the Lojen Hot Springs. These offer a perfect opportunity for relaxation and recovery after a challenging ride through the high-altitude terrain.
