I had never been to the area because it does not have much visual appeal, since there are hardly any trees and the vegetation is bushes and esparto grass. But the two climbs we did, to Alto de Cámara and Bolón, were short but quite demanding and I did like them.

Hermitage dedicated to San Isidro located in a 60,000 m2 pine forest, recently built after the eviction of the old one that was on a private property. Every year in the month of May a pilgrimage is celebrated coinciding with the festival of San Isidro. From here there are nice views of the small town of Salinas and the currently dry Laguna.

Laguna De Salinas is a haven for Andean wildlife, offering fantastic opportunities for animal spotting. Hikers can often see vicuñas, alpacas, llamas, and foxes. During the wet season, the lagoon becomes a prime birdwatching spot, where you might even glimpse all three species of highland flamingos, along with various ducks, condors, and eagles.
The dry season, from May to December, is generally the best time for family hiking. During these months, the weather is more stable, and the salt flats are most prominent, offering incredible photographic opportunities. The rainy season (January to May) transforms the area into a lake, which is excellent for birdwatching but can make some trails muddy.
Absolutely! Beyond the natural beauty, you can explore traditional villages like Chiguata on routes leading to the lagoon, which features pre-Inca terraces and colonial churches. You might also observe local salt workers collecting borate from the dry lakebed, offering a glimpse into local culture.
Given the high altitude (4,300 meters above sea level), it's crucial to dress in layers, even on sunny days, as temperatures can change quickly. Bring sun protection (hats, sunscreen, sunglasses), plenty of water, snacks, and sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. Acclimatization to the altitude is also important, especially for children.
Yes, for families seeking a bit more challenge, routes like the Mirador de Salinas – Arco de Cámara loop from Asociación Amigos de Acampada Campo Alegre offer a moderate experience.
