Of the 1400km of the inner-German border, unfortunately only a few places like this remain! How do you want to teach children history if you destroy everything! Much more of it should have been left standing, but in the united capital, investment was rather made in buildings. I remember this threatening border as a child and I find it simply sad what is left of it. This way, it's hard to convey history to my little adventurous daughter. You have to touch, see and understand on site. If a pompous building stands there today, what do I want to tell my adventurous daughter with that?

A beautiful historic market square, well-preserved and restored half-timbered houses, a few cafes and ice cream parlors invite you to sit outside in the summer.

Two saints have been chosen as patron saints for this church in Untereßfeld – and, of course, for the town and community: + John the Baptist (sometimes referred to as John the Baptist) is a figure attested to in the biblical accounts of the New Testament. He preached repentance from sin to the people of that time and prepared them for the coming of the Messiah. He saw this ancient promise fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who came to him to be baptized. + The second patron saint, however, is very rare in my experience; apart from this one, I have not yet encountered a church dedicated to Saint Aquilinus. According to my research, he was a priest from the turn of the millennium (his life dates are recorded as being from around 970 (Würzburg) to around 1018 (Milan)) who rejected the bishopric in Cologne and Paris and went to northern Italy. There he was murdered for his faith.

Built in 1965/1966, the tower was located directly on the inner-German border. Visitors from all over the world used to come to gaze into the GDR beyond its border fortifications and the death strip.
