The lower bank of the Schlei shows the quiet, natural side of the region around Kappeln. Along the bank, meadows, reed areas, and small bays alternate. The water of the Schlei reaches deep into the landscape and has shaped the lives of the people in the region for centuries. From the shore, there are beautiful views of the opposite banks, passing sailboats, and the wide landscape. Especially in calm weather, a peaceful atmosphere is created, inviting you to walk, cycle, and linger. The riverside landscape makes it clear how closely Kappeln and the surrounding villages are connected to the Schlei as a habitat, transport route, and a defining element of the landscape.

The Kappeln bascule bridge is a landmark of the town and spans the Schlei. It connects Kappeln with the northern bank of the Schlei and can be opened for shipping traffic. The current bridge was put into operation in 2002 and is a two-leaf bascule bridge. The opening of the bridge, when sailboats and other ships pass through the Schlei, is particularly worth seeing. It is part of the important transport link along the Schlei and shapes the cityscape of Kappeln.

The Heringszaun in Kappeln is a historic fish-catching device in the Schlei and a testament to traditional fishing. The structure consists of wooden stakes driven into the riverbed, which blocked the herring's path. The fish could then be collected and subsequently caught. The Kappeln Heringszaun is today an important technical monument and recalls the former economic importance of herring fishing for the region.

Why is the detour here worthwhile? Because a life without a view of the sea is possible, but not desirable.

In clear weather, you can look to the horizon, watch ships and sailboats, or simply enjoy the sparkling water. The view is particularly appealing due to the contrast: the turquoise blue and gray of the Baltic Sea meets the yellowish-brown of the sand and earth of the cliff, often green with grass and bushes on top. The partly rugged cliff edges and the structures of the coast shaped by the water are fascinating to behold. In contrast to many developed promenades, the cliff at Schönhagen is very natural. This contributes to the tranquility and authenticity of the experience. Especially in the evening, when the sun sets over the sea, the cliff transforms into a magical place. The colors of the sky are reflected in the water, and the silhouette of the coast stands out picturesquely. Down on the beach, you can walk directly below the cliff. From there, the coast appears even more imposing, and you have the opportunity to search for fossils or "Hühnergötter" (thunder eggs) that are exposed by erosion. Often, narrow paths or wider walking trails run directly along the top of the cliff edge. These offer not only the best view but also a feeling of freedom and vastness. The cliff of Schönhagen is a perfect place to experience the beauty of the Baltic Sea in its original form and to let your soul dangle. A visit is very worthwhile.
