In Vechta, part of the historic citadel has been restored. Within the citadel lies the Vechta Museum with its "Museum in the Armory" and "Castrum Vechtense." In the old armory, history from the Bronze Age, the Middle Ages, the Thirty Years' War, and the building's more recent past as a prison until 1991 comes alive on three floors, all of which are accessible for people with disabilities. A small bronze plaque is attached to the third crossbeam of the mill's timber-framed structure, bearing the inscription: "Here is the historic spot where the donkey decided to become a member of the Bremen Town Musicians."
