The Gaustabanen is a unique funicular railway that takes visitors to the summit of Gaustatoppen. What makes it special is that most of the railway runs inside the mountain. Construction began in the 1950s as a top-secret NATO military project to reach a radio and radar installation on the summit. The railway's existence was only revealed in 1990, and it has been open to tourists since 2010. The journey consists of two sections: - A small, battery-powered train travels 850 meters horizontally into the mountain. - At the end, you transfer to a funicular railway that travels 1,040 meters diagonally upwards to the top station just below the summit. The Gaustabanen makes visiting Gaustatoppen, with its breathtaking views, much easier and is definitely a unique experience. 😉👍

Beautiful old railway bridge in Rjukan over the Måna River. Next to it is a bridge for cars.

The path up here still has snowy sections even in June (the time of the climb is early June 2025). Higher-cut boots are recommended to protect your feet from getting wet.

Even the climb here is worthwhile for those who don't want to hike to the top, perhaps because they're hiking with children or something similar. The view is spectacular. From here, it's still quite a climb to the summit.

From here, you can not only reach the summit, but also the more easily accessible, broad ridge of Gaustatoppen. The view from here also rewards the climb through the scree.

Gausdalen Naturreservat offers a wide selection of trails suitable for families, with over 30 routes to explore. Many of these are considered easy, making them perfect for outings with children.
Yes, there are several easy options. For a pleasant, shorter stroll, consider the Lover's Path – Rjukan Church loop from Rjukan, which is just over 3 km long and features minimal elevation gain. It's a great choice for a relaxed family outing.
Absolutely. Many of the trails are designed as loops, which are ideal for families as you don't have to retrace your steps. The Railway Bridge – Mana River Riverside Path loop from Rjukan is an easy, circular option that follows the scenic Mana River for about 7 km.
The Husedalen Valley is renowned for its spectacular series of four major waterfalls and is considered one of Norway's most beautiful hikes. While the full 12-13 km return walk might be long for very young children, parts of the trail are accessible, allowing families to witness the raw power of nature and enjoy views of falls like Tavita Fossen and Nyastølfossen.
The family-friendly trails often feature well-maintained paths, riverside routes, and forest tracks. You can expect a mix of gentle slopes and relatively flat sections, making them manageable for various fitness levels. Some routes, like those along the Mana River, offer smooth surfaces suitable for a relaxed pace.
Generally, dogs are welcome on trails in Gausdalen Naturreservat, but they must be kept on a leash, especially during certain times of the year to protect wildlife. Always check local signage for specific regulations on individual trails or within protected areas.
While Gaustatoppen offers breathtaking panoramic views, its ascent can be challenging. For family-friendly viewpoints, consider trails that offer glimpses of the surrounding mountains and valleys without extreme elevation. The Mana River paths provide scenic views of the river and its surroundings, offering a more relaxed experience.
The warmer months, typically from late spring through early autumn (May to September), are ideal for family hiking. During this period, the weather is generally milder, trails are clear of snow, and the natural scenery is at its most vibrant. Always check local weather forecasts before heading out.
For families with older children looking for a bit more of a challenge, the Haddelandsveien and Ryes Veg Trail is a moderate option spanning over 10 km with some elevation gain. It offers a rewarding experience without being overly strenuous.
Parking availability varies by trailhead. Many popular starting points, especially near towns like Rjukan or access points to well-known trails, will have designated parking areas. It's advisable to check specific route descriptions for parking information before your trip.
