The area is part of the Rjukan-Notodden Industrial Heritage Site, which has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its significance to global industry in the 20th century. During World War II, Vemork in Rjukan became the center of one of the most important and daring sabotage missions. Heavy water sabotage operations prevented the Nazis from obtaining materials for the construction of atomic bombs. In the mountains above Rjukan are giant mirrors. These serve to reflect sunlight into the town during the dark winter months.

The Krossobahn was the first cable car in Northern Europe. It was built in 1928 and was a gift from Norsk Hydro to the residents of Rjukan. All residents should have the opportunity to get up into the sunlight during the winter months.
