Visitors learn secrets and information about the production and recipe of this world-renowned specialty. Secondly, the museum sheds light on viticulture in Krems – and the international success of Krems wine.

Museum Krems In the heart of Krems an der Donau's old town lies Museum Krems – housed in the listed building of a former 13th-century Dominican monastery. The museum encompasses not only the baroque courtyard and the monastery church, but also a historic wine cellar. A permanent exhibition showcases the history and culture of this Danube city, drawing on extensive city and private collections. Rotating special exhibitions invite visitors on ever-new journeys of discovery. Selected exhibits and archaeological finds present "Life with the River." The economic, artistic, and social significance of Krems since the Middle Ages is vividly portrayed. The Krems Baroque painter Martin Johann Schmidt is given particular prominence. The "Krems Pfennig" – Austria's oldest coin – can also be admired in person.

Dominican Church In the 18th century, the church was remodeled in the Baroque style. Fragments of ceiling paintings from this period have survived; the Assumption of Mary is attributed to Martin Johann Schmidt (Kremser Schmidt). In 1784, Emperor Joseph II dissolved the monastery. The church was deconsecrated and subsequently served as a button factory, granary, theater, cinema, and fire station. In 1891, a mezzanine floor was installed, creating a museum space. Apartments and workshops were housed in the former monastery. In 1961, the complex underwent extensive restoration and has since been used as the Krems City Museum (Wine City Museum). Visitors enter the museum through the medieval monastery gate. On display are late Gothic sculptures and panels, drawings and paintings by Martin Johann Schmidt, and a folklore collection focusing on viticulture. Since 2011/2012, the church has served as temporary exhibition space for the State Gallery of Contemporary Art during the summer months.
