Blacksmithing in the city probably only gained strength against the background of the decline in trade. The beginnings of the Friesoyther blacksmiths' guild are in the dark. The St. John's Guild mentioned in Friesoythe in 1535 was hardly an association of blacksmiths, as the patron saint of the guild was the Apostle Andreas. There is no doubt that the smiths' guild appeared at the end of 1599, when its statutes were first laid down in writing. At the time, however, the relevant provisions were already part of the well-praised tradition. In addition to the skill of the smiths, an important prerequisite for the flourishing of crafts in Friesoythe was that bog iron ore, an important raw material for production in the immediate vicinity of the city, could be extracted.

The history of the mill is closely linked to the Warnken family. The house was destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt in 1950. FRIESOYTHE For a long time nobody knew exactly what would happen to the old water mill in Friesoythe. But in the spring of 1997 – after being vacant for more than 14 years – the Friesoythe mill association concluded a long-term lease agreement with the city of Friesoythe and began to renovate the building and transform it into a cultural meeting place. As early as 1999, the first major events could be held in the "Alte Wassermühle" cultural center. In a final construction phase, water wheels were installed again in May 2004. The water mill is known beyond the city limits, not least because an information center for renewable energies was set up.

When the castle was built in the 13th century, the Counts of Tecklenburg also built a water mill in 1227. It had a water wheel that drove the grinder. In April 1945 it was completely destroyed by the effects of war and then rebuilt without the water wheel. In 1984 the mill was relocated and the building was left to decay. In 1997 the mill association took over the building and expanded it with the help of the citizens.
