The terrain is nice, but the signage isn't great... we start a circuit (no. 5) and very quickly there are no more signs... Circuit no. 7 seems well signposted

Excellent circuit in the Florimond woods for those looking for a few speed sensations. To prolong the experience, the slag heaps 230 and 94 are not far away!

Pyramidal circuit Follow the black arrows n°7, some of them are missing (the GPS tracks help to make the complete tour). There are also a few climbs/descents that are a little technical but short to avoid for real beginners but it's easy to do all the same. Some area a little muddy during rainy periods. I tried to get as close as possible to the original circuit or the arrows by doing the circuit several times & comparing the GPS tracks recorded and adding the missing paths on OpenStreeMap (sometimes the path of the map & the arrows differ a little, e.g. from the 1st entrance to the forest, the arrows pass a little lower than the path on the map, so I made a little mix between the 2, which adds a little climb ;) )

The Drocourt slag heap is like a bike park (without the cable cars ;o). Ideal for improving technique or letting off steam for two hours

for heavy hitters who are not afraid of emptiness in places and a good sense of balance and a bike in good condition, especially the brakes so as not to pick up too much speed because there are many gullies, in places do a survey before making a decent if you do not want to fall into a ravine at the end of the decent and even at a place in a deep canyon, for safety do not do it alone in the event of a serious fall it is an isolated place very little frequented.

While Bénifontaine itself doesn't host dedicated bike parks, the surrounding Hauts-de-France region offers a variety of mountain biking opportunities. You'll find everything from purpose-built pumptracks to natural singletracks and trails on former slag heaps. These locations provide diverse experiences, from circuits designed for speed to technical, wooded paths with bends, bumps, and roots.
Yes, for experienced riders seeking a challenge, the Terril de Drocourt is highly recommended. It's described as being 'like a bike park' with challenging climbs and descents that require good technique and strong brakes. Another option is the Cabiddu Park MTB Base, which offers several mountain bike routes, including a difficult 'black 7' circuit.
Several locations offer excellent viewpoints. The Spoil heaps 74 and 74a provide a breathtaking view once you reach the top after a nice climb. Similarly, the Singletrack on Terril de Grenay offers a magnificent view of the mining basin and the twin slag heaps of Loos-en-Gohelle.
While specific 'family-friendly' categories aren't listed for all bike parks, the Cabiddu Park MTB Base offers routes with varying difficulty levels, which might include easier options. For general cycling, you can explore the 'Cycling around Bénifontaine' guide, which features routes like the "Marcel Park Pond – Cabiddu Park MTB Base loop from Billy-Berclau" with an easy difficulty grade. You can find more options in the Cycling around Bénifontaine guide.
The region is characterized by its unique industrial heritage, particularly the 'terrils' or slag heaps, which have been repurposed into exciting biking terrains. Locations like the Spoil heaps 74 and 74a offer climbs and singletracks around these distinctive man-made hills. The Paturelles Slag Heap Singletrack, behind the Archéos de Râches site, is another example, featuring a long, wooded, and sometimes technical singletrack.
Visitors particularly enjoy the unique terrain offered by the repurposed slag heaps, which provide both challenging climbs and exhilarating descents. The technical singletracks, panoramic views from the summits, and the opportunity to improve riding technique are frequently highlighted. The variety of trails, from speed-focused pumptracks to winding forest paths, also contributes to a positive experience.
Yes, the Cabiddu Park MTB Base is noted for having useful facilities, including a washing station and an inflator available for public use, making it a convenient starting point for your rides.
Absolutely. Beyond the specific bike park highlights, the area offers a broader network of mountain biking trails. For instance, the "Marais de la Galance – Lagoon of Harnes loop from Pont-à-Vendin" is a moderate 40 km MTB route. You can explore more options in the MTB Trails around Bénifontaine guide.
The region around Bénifontaine also caters to gravel biking enthusiasts. Routes like the "Canteraine Park – Deûle Canal loop from Bauvin – Provin" offer a moderate 51 km gravel experience. For a comprehensive list of routes, check out the Gravel biking around Bénifontaine guide.
If you're looking for speed sensations, the Bois de Florimond Pumptrack is an excellent choice. Located within the Florimond woods, this circuit is specifically designed for an exhilarating ride. You can also extend your experience by exploring the nearby slag heaps 230 and 94.
While specific seasonal recommendations aren't provided for all locations, the Paturelles Slag Heap Singletrack is noted as being 'particularly pleasant in good weather.' Roots on technical trails can become slippery when wet, so dry conditions are generally preferable for optimal enjoyment and safety on many of the natural singletracks and slag heap trails.
