Frauenberg Chapel and view over Eichstätt

Highlight • Religious Site

In 1720 the prince-bishop Johann Anton I. Knebel von Katzenellenbogen (1705-1725), increasingly frail and suffering from gout, had a statue of the Madonna erected to the east of his residence, Willibaldsburg.

A legend tells of the portrait that the prince had it made from a log that had long been in front of the carpenters' entrance on Willibaldsburg and, although completely dry, had suddenly grown a branch with fresh leaves.

The statue, which was designated on October 28, 1723, was initially protected from the weather only by a wooden roof and wooden walls, and was soon revered by the population. Under Prince-Bishop Johann Anton II von Freyberg (1736-1757), the chapel building that exists today was built in 1738-1739 and consecrated in 1751.

Just a few meters from the hiking trail (signposted!) is this incredibly magnificent viewpoint: a sweeping view over the ancient Danube Valley. This tiny detour is a must—don't miss it! Even if you have to climb the last few meters...

The Frauenberg Chapel was built by Prince-Bishop Johann Anton II of Freyberg in 1738/1739 and consecrated in 1751. A visit to the interior is worthwhile. Originally, before the chapel existed, there was a statue of the Madonna, which was built in 1720 by Prince-Bishop Johann Anton I of Katzenelnbogen. Legend has it that the statue was carved from an old, completely dried-out tree trunk. This had probably been lying for a long time at the entrance to the court carpenter's workshop at Willibaldsburg when it suddenly sprouted a branch with fresh leaves. From up here you have a good view of Eichstätt, the Altmühl Valley and the Rebdorf Monastery. Accordingly, it is crowded in spring and autumn on sunny days. If you go up there by bike, you need a few grains of energy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of 'mountain peaks' can I expect around Rennertshofen?

Rennertshofen itself is located in a predominantly flat or gently rolling landscape, so you won't find towering alpine peaks directly within the municipality. The 'peaks' in this guide refer to elevated viewpoints and hills in the broader region that offer excellent panoramic views, such as the Frauenberg Chapel and view over Eichstätt or the View of Dollnstein and the Altmühl Valley from the Stupberg.

Are there good hiking trails to reach these viewpoints?

Yes, there are various hiking opportunities in the wider area. You can find several routes, including challenging ones like the 'Dohlenfelsen – Rock Window loop from Wellheim' or 'Jägersteig Trail – Beixenhart Rock Arch loop from Dollnstein'. For more options, explore the Mountain Hikes around Rennertshofen guide.

What are some of the most scenic viewpoints in the region?

The region offers several beautiful viewpoints. The Löwenkopf Viewpoint is known for its great views, often described as 'pure wellness'. Another popular spot is the View of Dollnstein and the Altmühl Valley from the Stupberg, which provides a beautiful panoramic vista of the Altmühltal and Urdonautal.

Are there any historical or cultural sites among these elevated spots?

Absolutely. The Frauenberg Chapel and view over Eichstätt is a notable historical and religious site. Built in the 18th century, it offers not only a beautiful view of Eichstätt but also a glimpse into the region's past, with a fascinating legend about its origins.

What is the best time of year to visit these viewpoints?

The best time to visit is generally from spring to autumn (April to October) when the weather is mild and the views are clear. While some paths are accessible in winter, like the Stupberg, they can become icy and require sure-footedness. Always check local weather conditions before heading out.

Are there any family-friendly options for exploring these elevated areas?

While many of the listed highlights are categorized as 'intermediate' difficulty, the paths to these viewpoints are generally manageable for active families. For example, the climb to the Stupberg is short, offering a rewarding view without an overly strenuous ascent. Always consider the fitness level of your group and choose routes accordingly.

Can I find quiet spots for a rest or picnic at these 'peaks'?

Yes, some locations are ideal for a peaceful break. The Langenaltheimer Hardt Summit Cross is described as a 'very nice quiet place' with seating options for a rest and a great view. Similarly, the Summit tree with lighting and view offers a beautifully laid out spot to enjoy the Danube valley.

What other outdoor activities can I do near these viewpoints?

Are there any specific tips for visiting the Stupberg viewpoint?

The access to Stupberg is slightly hidden. It involves a path from the Altmühl bridge, leading over the Altmühlweg and a mountain road, then a meadow path to a steep trail to the summit. In winter, the short climb can be icy, so it's best for sure-footed individuals during those months.

What do visitors particularly enjoy about these viewpoints?

Visitors consistently highlight the stunning panoramic views. Whether it's the expansive look over Eichstätt from Frauenberg, the 'pure wellness' feeling at Löwenkopf, or the beautiful vista of the Altmühltal from Stupberg, the opportunity to take in the landscape from an elevated perspective is a major draw.
