🏰 Borgo Medievale di Ceri: A must-see detour on the tuff The village of Ceri is one of the most spectacular cycling gems in the Agro Cerite area. It suddenly appears before your eyes, perched incredibly atop an imposing tuff spur with vertical walls. It is a tiny village, suspended in time, where fewer than 100 inhabitants reside permanently today. 📝 Bits of history and curiosities • The origins: The first fortifications date back to 1236. The name is closely linked to nearby Cerveteri: when the inhabitants of the ancient Etruscan city of Caere fled from the Saracen invasions, they took refuge on this fortified rock, calling it Caere Novum (hence Ceri). The original ancient settlement instead took the name Caere Vetus (modern-day Cerveteri). • The great lords: Over the centuries, it was a fiefdom of the most important Roman families, from the Anguillara to the Orsini, from the Cesi to the Odescalchi, up to the Torlonia, who purchased it in 1833. • The siege: In 1503, the village strenuously resisted a very harsh siege by the troops of Cesare Borgia. 📍 What to see during your bike stop: 1. The access ramp: The entrance to the village is spectacular and takes place through a single, very narrow road entirely carved into the tuff rock. 2. Piazza Immacolata: The heart of the village, an intimate and cozy little square overlooked by historic buildings and excellent local trattorias. 3. Palazzo Torlonia (The Castle): It dominates the highest part of the cliff, perfectly integrated into the defensive rock. 4. Sanctuary of Our Lady of Ceri: Built on the remains of an ancient temple (probably dedicated to the Etruscan goddess Mater Matuta), it houses inside a cycle of medieval frescoes from the 12th century of inestimable value, rediscovered only in 1980 under layers of plaster.

The construction of the Castle of Ostia Antica began in 1483 at the behest of Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere (future Pope Julius II, 1503-1513) and was entrusted to the Florentine architect Baccio Pontelli. The castle still represents a virtuous example of Renaissance military architecture today and can be visited, more info here: https://www.ostiaantica.beniculturali.it/it/aree-archeologica-e-monumentali/borgo-di-ostia-antica- e-castello-di-giulio-ii/

Beautiful fortress inside the village of Ostia Antica in front of the basilica of Sant'Aura. The castle built by Pope Julius II towards the end of the 1500s contains frescoes by Baldassare Peruzzi. A stop in the village before or after a ride on the Pasolini path is almost a must.
