Today we took the shortest route from the tavern to the summit—fantastically beautiful and easy to walk! We then took the circular route, which is listed as a tour on komoot, on the descent, but had trouble finding the right path, as the first half was unmarked and marked only by a few cairns. It's extremely dangerous, as you're often very close to the rocky precipice, not knowing where to go next. The steep scree slope is very difficult to navigate on the descent, and the thorny bushes aren't very inviting to hike through. We definitely wouldn't recommend this trail again, even though it is, of course, very scenic. About halfway through, we found another red dot marking, but this path was also not so pleasant due to the many fallen trees. So, our opinion: Up to the summit and back down the same way!

This peak is frequently cloudy, so you may not get 360 degree views. The top can be very windy and much colder than the way up. Make sure you sign the book when you reach the top.

The northwest side is a very steep descent, so you should be careful here. Also, in May, a lot of flying beetles gather on the leeward side, and they'll "attack" you if you get too close to the edge. Otherwise, the summit is incredibly beautiful and definitely worth the climb!

Good footwear is advisable as there is no real path leading up.

Great hike with a wonderful view from the mountain village of Zia to the summit with a beautiful chapel below. The trail has an alpine character in places, so it's better to wear sturdy shoes and plan enough time (3-4 hours) as well as enough water (there are no springs etc.) and if necessary, take a jacket etc. in the off-season (cold wind up there)! Have fun 😊

Achtung: zur Runde von Telendos gibt es folgende offizielle Informationen vom Kalymnos Rescue Team: "The team informs that the route is difficult with several exposed points that do not tolerate mistakes. It requires proper preparation, low-level climbing skills, experience in hiking on loose terrain without trails, and many other things that only experienced hikers can handle in such fields. (it is NOT RECOMMENDED during the summer months)" siehe https://qrco.de/beAXgd

The region offers a variety of impressive peaks. Highly rated by the komoot community are the Summit of Mount Dikeos on Kos, known for its fantastic views, and the Mount Zas Summit (Naxos), which offers amazing panoramic views across the Cycladic islands. Another favorite is Akramitis Summit on Rhodes, which rewards hikers with incredibly beautiful vistas.
The mountain peaks in the Aegean boast diverse natural features. On Samos, Mount Kerkis is a Natura 2000 Special Protection Area, home to endemic plants and diverse fauna amidst its limestone slopes and coniferous forests. Santorini's Nea Kameni Volcano offers a unique volcanic landscape. On Rhodes, the Profitis Ilias Summit area is known for wild cyclamen, rare orchids, and anemones.
Yes, several peaks are steeped in history and mythology. Mount Zas on Naxos is fabled to be the childhood home of the Greek god Zeus, with a cave on its slopes believed to be his birthplace. On Samos, Mount Kerkis is home to Pythagoras' Cave, where the philosopher Pythagoras is reputed to have hidden, along with Byzantine hermitages.
You'll find a range of hiking trails, from intermediate to challenging. For example, near the mountain peaks, you can explore routes like the difficult "Summit of Mount Dikeos – Trail to Dikeos loop from Zia" on Kos, or the moderate "Skaros Rock – View of Oia loop from Faros Akrotiriou-Oias (Thiras Thesi Kalnteras)" in Santorini. Many trails offer rewarding views, but often involve steep, rocky terrain. You can find more hiking options in the Hiking at the Αποκεντρωμένη Διοίκηση Αιγαίου guide.
The best time to visit is generally during spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) when temperatures are milder and the landscapes are lush. Summer can be very hot, especially on exposed, rocky trails with minimal shade, making early morning ascents advisable. During winter, higher peaks like Mount Pelineo on Chios can experience snow and icy winds, requiring specialized equipment for ascents.
Absolutely. Peaks like Mount Kerkis on Samos and Mount Zas on Naxos offer challenging routes with steep, rocky terrain. Mount Pelineo on Chios also features demanding, intermittent herd paths through stone and loose rock, suitable for experienced hikers. Good footwear and preparation are essential for these ascents.
The summits in the Aegean offer spectacular panoramic views. From Mount Zas on Naxos, you can see across Naxos and neighboring Cycladic islands. Mount Kerkis on Samos provides views of the Aegean Sea, neighboring islands, and even the Turkish coast on clear days. Similarly, Mount Pelineo on Chios offers stunning 360-degree vistas extending to the Turkish coast.
Beyond hiking, the region offers various outdoor activities. You can find mountain biking trails, such as the "Prasonisi Beach loop from Lachania" on Rhodes, or gravel biking routes like the "Vivlos Windmills – Bazeos Tower loop from Naxos". For more options, explore the MTB Trails at the Αποκεντρωμένη Διοίκηση Αιγαίου guide or the Gravel biking at the Αποκεντρωμένη Διοίκηση Αιγαίου guide.
Yes, several peaks feature notable religious or cultural sites. On Chios, Mount Pelineo's summit, Profitis Ilias, has a small church, Agia Triada, remarkably bolted and chained down along the ridge. Mount Dikeos on Kos also features a chapel at its summit. Prophet Elias Chapel on Santorini is another significant religious building with historical importance and great views.
Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking panoramic views from the summits, often extending across multiple islands and even to the Turkish coast. The sense of accomplishment after a challenging climb, the mythological and historical significance of sites like the Cave of Zeus, and the diverse natural beauty, including unique flora and fauna, are also frequently highlighted as major draws.
Given the often steep, rocky, and sometimes loose terrain, sturdy footwear with good ankle support is highly recommended. Layers are advisable as temperatures can vary, especially at higher altitudes or during different times of day. During summer, minimal shade means sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is crucial, and always carry enough water. For winter ascents on higher peaks, be prepared for snow and icy winds with appropriate cold-weather gear.
