The history of the Oberwaldberg is (unfortunately) a somewhat disreputable one. Originally, gravel was mined here, from 1972 it was converted into a landfill for the district and grew from around 1985 to the present-day "mountain". The landfill was closed and in 2006 this visitor platform was built, from which you have a wonderful view over the Rhine-Main area. The area is still largely inaccessible today. However, a path leads up to the summit and over the mountain. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oberwaldberg

While Raunheim itself is situated in a generally flat riverine landscape, the 'peaks' in this guide refer to notable elevated points and viewpoints in the surrounding Rhine-Main region. These are typically hills or rises that offer panoramic views, rather than traditional high mountains. For example, the Oberwaldberg provides excellent views of the Frankfurt skyline and the Taunus.
For expansive views, consider the View of the Frankfurt skyline from Oberwaldberg, which offers vistas of the Taunus, Frankfurt's skyline, and the Odenwald. Another great spot is the View from Oberwaldberg, Mörfelden, known for its outlook over Frankfurt and the wider Rhine-Main area.
Yes, the Neolithic Burial Mound Kapellenberg is a significant historical site, dating back to between 4500 and 3900 BC. Additionally, the Laubenheimer Höhe Monument is a historical monument that also serves as a viewpoint.
Absolutely. The Gickelsberg is particularly family-friendly, especially in winter for sledding with smaller children. Many of the viewpoints, like the Oberwaldberg, are accessible via easily manageable paths suitable for families.
The region around Raunheim offers a variety of outdoor activities. You can find numerous routes for hiking, cycling, and mountain biking. For hiking, explore options like the 'Wakeport Raunheimer Waldsee' loop. Cyclists can enjoy routes such as the 'Main riverbank path at the bird island' loop. For more challenging rides, check out the MTB trails. You can find detailed routes in the Hiking around Raunheim, Cycling around Raunheim, and MTB Trails around Raunheim guides.
The Oberwaldberg is noted as being 140 meters high, offering significant elevation for views. The View from Oberwaldberg, Mörfelden is also described as the highest elevation in the district of Gross-Gerau.
For genuine mountain experiences with higher elevations, you would need to travel further within Hesse. Notable regions include the Rhön, home to the Wasserkuppe (950 meters), or the Taunus, where you'll find the Großer Feldberg (881.5 meters). These areas offer more significant elevation changes and mountainous terrain compared to the immediate vicinity of Raunheim.
Visitors consistently highlight the rewarding views. Whether it's the distant Frankfurt skyline, the Taunus, or the Rhine-Main area, the panoramic outlooks are a major draw. The accessibility of many points and the opportunity for a pleasant break at a monument or a small ascent are also frequently appreciated.
The Laubenheimer Höhe Monument offers a great view of the Rhine Valley and includes a rest area. However, be aware that it is situated directly on the road.
The Rhine-Main region is pleasant to explore throughout much of the year. Spring and autumn offer mild temperatures and beautiful scenery, ideal for hiking and cycling. Summer is also great, especially for enjoying the views, though it can be warmer. Even in winter, some paths are accessible, and the Gickelsberg is noted for winter sledding.
