Easy hikes and walks in Barren Grounds Nature Reserve

Kiama Blowhole is one of the South Coast’s best-known natural attractions, where the ocean swell surges through a sea cave, sending seawater high into the air under the right conditions. From here, not only do you get sweeping coastal views, but the blowhole varies with the swell and tide, making every visit a little different.

A short spur trail leads through a small break in the trees and opens up to a partial view over Kangaroo Valley. The view is framed by forest, offering a more enclosed feel compared to the lookout above. It’s not signposted and can be easy to miss, but it’s a lovely place for a quiet pause along the climb.

Drawing Room Rocks walking track is a relatively short but steady ascent, climbing through rainforest and open eucalypt forest within Barren Grounds Nature Reserve. The path is well-worn but uneven in places, with roots, rocks, and a few short, steep sections along the way, so it’s a good idea to wear proper footwear, especially after rain, when parts of the path can be slippery. The track leads to a wide sandstone plateau, with fantastic views at the end of this short yet rewarding climb.

This lookout sits on a unique, wide sandstone platform shaped into table-like formations created by natural erosion. The open rock surface offers sweeping views across Kangaroo Valley and Berry, and the coastline in the distance. There are no barriers at the edge, so watch your footing as you take in beautiful expansive views. It’s a popular spot to watch the sunset, so you’ll likely see others here enjoying a twilight picnic if you’re lucky enough to be here in the evening.

Minnamurra Falls is a multi-tiered cascade dropping approximately twenty meters into a rocky rainforest gorge. Fed by Minnamurra River, the falls flow year-round, though volume depends on recent rainfall and are most impressive after wet weather. Viewing platforms provide a safe vantage point without leaving the formed track. Swimming is not permitted.

The Lyrebird Loop Walk winds through cool subtropical rainforest within the Minnamurra Rainforest precinct. Elevated boardwalks and paved sections protect delicate vegetation as you pass towering figs, palms, and vines beneath a dense canopy. The track climbs steadily toward Upper Minnamurra Falls, with sustained inclines that can feel demanding despite the absence of stairs. Well shaded and humid, it offers relief from coastal heat. Keep an eye out for Superb Lyrebirds foraging nearby. Carry water and arrive before the afternoon entry cutoff.

Minnamurra Rainforest sits within Budderoo National Park, protecting a rare pocket of subtropical rainforest along the Illawarra escarpment. Access to this precinct requires a vehicle entry fee of $12 (charged per car), payable at the park entry station. The area features formed walking tracks and elevated boardwalks to protect fragile vegetation. Stay on designated paths at all times. Pets are not permitted, and swimming is not allowed at the falls. Conditions can be slippery after rain, so wear suitable footwear.
