Due to the abundance of water, Offenheimer had deep wells drilled. The water drawn from these wells was piped to the cellulose factory, where it was used for paper production. After paper production ceased (in 1970), an artificial marshland was created, which was drained starting in 1972, along with the still-visible drainage system. Today, the area is an important refuge for birds and other animals.
