Little Ice Lake is nestled in the basin just next to towering rock walls. A short trail takes you to its shore where you can take a break.

Lower Ice Lake Basin is a great place to catch some breath again after the steep climb from Ice Lake Trailhead. Take a break to enjoy the scenery before your final ascent to the upper alpine lakes. There are some nice streams to fill your water bottle (don’t forget to treat the water).

Clear Lake is a popular lake for hikers and runners. It is also a popular spot for fishing. The lake is at a high altitude, so the trail up to the lake has a lot of elevation change.

At 365 feet Bridal Veil Falls is the tallest free-falling waterfall in Colorado. There is a privately owned hydroelectric power plant at the top of the falls.

The ascent to Clear Lake from South Mineral Campground is steep but rewarding. The river that drains from the lake makes a magnificent waterfall along the side of the trail. You can also park at Clear Lake — though you will likely need a high clearance four-wheel drive vehicle to make it all the way to the trailhead — and hike the many trails overlooking Ice Lakes and the San Juans.

Ice Lake is a stunning alpine lake that is perfect for a break. You are surrounded by the majestic peaks of Golden Horn, Pilot Knob and Ulysses S Grant Peak. The best time to visit this high alpine lake is from July through August, but in a high snow year, bring winter gear even in summer.

From the top of these 365 feet, the spectacular Bridal Veil Falls are the highest of the Colorado waterfalls. You should know that this is also the name of one of the Niagara Falls.
