Steep in the first part but easy to do in dry weather

A beautiful path, but difficult to park your car because there are just three parking spots, and you can't really turn around to look further. If you find one, take a spot; after all, you're here to walk.

One of the best views in the entire Bay Area. No question.

Fern Creek Trail is an excellent trail โย scenic views, technical underfoot, loose at times, mind your head on low branches. Close to the bottom there have been caribou land slips and tree falls over the years that have meant the trail is rerouted up and over ever so slightly. Absolutely adore this trail.

Baltimore Canyon Open Space Preserve offers a wide selection of hiking opportunities, with over 40 routes available. Many of these trails feature seasonal waterfalls, particularly after heavy rains, making it a prime destination for waterfall enthusiasts.
The best time to witness the waterfalls, especially the prominent Dawn Falls, is during winter and early spring, after heavy rains. This is when Larkspur Creek is engorged with storm runoff, and the seasonal waterfalls cascade impressively. The preserve also offers lush greenery in winter, wildflowers in spring, vibrant fall colors in autumn, and welcome shade in summer.
You can expect a diverse range of terrain. Trails often wind through dense, shaded forests of redwoods, Douglas firs, and big-leaf maples, following Larkspur Creek. Some paths are relatively flat fire roads, while others involve significant elevation changes as they climb towards ridges, offering both leisurely strolls and more strenuous hikes.
Yes, there are several loop options that allow you to experience the waterfalls and the preserve's varied landscapes. A popular choice is the Dawn Falls and Hoo-Koo-E-Koo Loop, a moderate 8.9-mile (14.4 km) path that combines the waterfall with a loop through diverse forest terrain. Another option is the Dawn Falls Trail โ Dawn Falls loop from Larkspur, an easy 3.3-mile (5.3 km) trail.
The duration of a waterfall hike varies depending on the chosen route and your pace. For example, the easy Dawn Falls Trail, which is 1.4 miles (2.3 km) long, typically takes about 45 minutes to complete. Longer, more challenging loops like the Dawn Falls and Hoo-Koo-E-Koo Loop can take several hours.
Absolutely. The preserve offers several easy routes perfect for beginners or families. The Dawn Falls Trail is an easy 1.4-mile (2.3 km) out-and-back path leading directly to Dawn Falls. The Southern Marin Line Fire Road, while not exclusively a waterfall trail, is a wide, gradual path suitable for strollers and offers access to the general area.
Yes, dogs are generally welcome in Baltimore Canyon Open Space Preserve. The Southern Marin Line Fire Road, which meanders through redwood groves and can connect to waterfall areas, is particularly popular with dog walkers, allowing off-leash dogs under voice control. Always ensure your dog is under control and follow local regulations.
Beyond the impressive waterfalls, you'll encounter lush forests of towering redwoods, Douglas firs, and big-leaf maples. Trails often skirt along Larkspur Creek, and in spring, you might spot wildflowers like fetid adder's tongue and trillium. For those seeking longer excursions, trails like the Hoo-Koo-E-Koo Fire Road Trail offer connections to neighboring parklands and potential scenic views of the San Francisco Bay from higher points.
While the primary focus is on the waterfalls and lush forest, some trails that climb towards ridges offer expansive views. For instance, the King Mountain Loop Trail, which is nearby, provides panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay, including the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, and extends all the way to San Francisco from its higher points. Connecting trails to Mount Tamalpais also offer stunning vistas.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.8 stars from over 500 reviews. Reviewers often praise the preserve's dense, shaded forests, the beauty of the seasonal waterfalls (especially Dawn Falls), and the varied terrain that offers options for all skill levels. The tranquil nature experience and the opportunity to connect with neighboring parklands are also frequently highlighted.
Yes, for experienced hikers seeking a greater challenge, there are routes with significant elevation changes and longer distances. The Dawn Falls and Hoo-Koo-E-Koo Loop is a moderate 8.9-mile (14.4 km) path that includes substantial climbs. For a truly demanding experience, the Lagunitas, Bon Tempe, and Alpine Lakes via Lakeview and Cataract Loop is a difficult 24 km route with nearly 900 meters of elevation gain, offering a comprehensive exploration of the wider area including multiple lakes and potential seasonal cascades.
Given the varied terrain and potential for wet conditions near waterfalls, it's recommended to wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good grip. Layers of clothing are advisable, as shaded forest areas can be cool, while climbs can generate warmth. A waterproof jacket is also a good idea, especially during the winter and spring months when the waterfalls are most active.
