Kahler Asten

Highlight • Summit

The Kahle Asten is the third highest mountain in the Rothaargebirge but certainly the best known, as it is located directly at the famous tourist destination Winterberg. He is 841 meters high and no matter where you come from, this means a long, crisp climb. But it's worth it: Upstairs not only a great view awaits you (from the branch tower, it is even better, from here you can see in clear weather to Brocken in the Harz!), But also a hotel with a restaurant. And of course a madness descent!

Very nice view and considerable rock formations. However, the ascent to the observation point requires some surefootedness and should only be done with suitable footwear.

Graf Stolberg Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Great hut that can be used as the start or end point of many hikes in the Waldeck Sauerland. There is a parking lot within walking distance. Delicious schnitzel and wheat beer!

Great place to run a lap or enjoy the heath by bike. Here you also have the opportunity to pick the highly recommended blueberries.
There is also the Hochheide hut near the heath. This invites you to take a break while hiking or walking.

June 7, 2023, Gorge and Bridge Trail on the Helle

The gorge and bridge path in Winterberg leads for around 4.2 kilometers through the low mountain gorge of the "Helle". The circular path begins in the heart of Winterberg, right next to the spa park, and it is hard to believe that such a special natural jewel can be found so close to the city. The hike is entertaining, but leads downhill quite steeply in places, so sturdy shoes are advisable. In addition, the leafy paths can be very slippery, especially in autumn.

A really great experience and almost in the middle of the city. You almost feel like you're in the primeval forest.

The up to 90 meters high Bruchhauser stones are a striking landscape symbol of this region and a landscape protection area. All are under strict nature protection, there is only one way up on the field stone with its summit cross.

"... The New Hagen near Niedersfeld is the largest high heath in North Rhine-Westphalia. The extraordinary landscape has its own fascination. Heath and raised bog are home to rare flora and fauna. The 800 meter high area is on the border with Hesse on the northern slope of the Clemensberg and has been under nature protection since 1955. Heidschnucken graze there, act as "biological lawnmowers" and thus ensure the preservation of the heather. Birds like cuckoo, capercaillie and goat milkers build their nests. Hobby biologists can even discover arctic and alpine plants in the Neuer Hagen nature reserve. ... " https://www.winterberg.de/poi/naturschutzgebiet-neuer-hagen/

December 7, 2020, Kahler Asten

Especially when the heather is in bloom, the Bald Asten is a sea of flowers. There is also a hotel up here. At 841.9 meters, it is the third highest mountain in the Rothaargebirge after the Langenberg and Hegekopf and the second highest mountain in North Rhine-Westphalia after the Langenberg. The Lenne and Odeborn springs and a high heath are located on the mountain.
