During the reign of Emperor Joseph II, Terezín was built as a fortress starting in 1780. At the same time, the monarch also had the Josefstadt Fortress built in Bohemia (later named after him). The Terezín Fortress was intended to protect the northwestern approaches to Bohemia from military attacks from Prussia. Together with Leitmeritz (Litoměřice), it secured the river crossings over the Elbe and Eger. The city was named after Maria Theresa, the mother of Joseph II.

Usually there is one, occasionally two, named saints who exercise the patronage over a church - and at the same time over the associated congregation. However, a different decision was made for this church in Theresienstadt: it was not dedicated to one of the - almost infinitely many - saints, but to Jesus Christ himself. And specifically to his resurrection. This special and rare patronage broadens the Christian view from Good Friday to the Easter perspective of hope: suffering and death are not the end, but are overcome in the infinite love of the triune God with the resurrection to eternal life.

The pier for passenger ships is located about half a kilometer downstream of the Elbe River from the Špindlerův road bridge, just before the Roudní navigable chamber, in the place where the Jewish quarter once stood. The Elbe cycle path passes around the wharf.

The Jewish cemetery in Terezín is a cemetery located about one kilometer south of the city of Terezín in the direction of Bohušovice nad Ohří in the Bohušovice basin (in fact, not far from the permanent Terezín cemetery). The Nazis initially buried dead prisoners from the Terezín ghetto here during the Second World War. They did so until September 7, 1942, when the Terezín crematorium was put into operation here and the dead began to be cremated here. Around 9,000 people were buried here in mass and individual graves. Burials were resumed here for a short time in mid-March 1945, when the operation of the crematorium was interrupted.
