Ruins of the Hindenburg Bridge

Highlight • Monument

The Hindenburg Bridge was a railway bridge over the Rhine between Rüdesheim am Rhein and Bingen-Kempten, named after Field Marshal General and later President Paul von Hindenburg since 1918. The bridge, which was commissioned on September 1, 1915 [2], was destroyed in World War II and was not rebuilt afterwards.

Since 2002 the remains of the Hindenburg Bridge have formed the easternmost point of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

Ruins of the Eleven-Thousand Maidens Tower

Highlight • Historical Site

The ruin of the eleven thousand maiden tower (also called eleven thousand maiden mill) in the district Elsheim owes its name to a legend around the holy Ursula of Cologne.

This late medieval roadblock was at the transition of the old road from Mainz to Kreuznach on the Selz (west of the village). Saint Ursula is said to have used the road with her entourage of 11,000 virgins on her way to Rome - hence the name "Eleventh Thousand Maiden's Tower". It is at the tower originally a fortified gatehouse with bridge. The course of the Selz was relocated in the 1960s, so that the bridge no longer crosses the Selz today.

The largely ruined ruins have recently been renovated and the atmosphere around the ruins has been upgraded. The Elsheimer Schnorressänger have taken over the sponsorship for the building in 2006. This is also documented humorously on the stone in front of the tower (in front of the picture):

(Quote) ... In the hope that another 11,000 virgins will follow this path, the Elsheim Schnorressänger 2006 took over the sponsorship

Waldthausen Castle

Highlight • Castle

Waldthausen Castle is not a real castle, but it is still beautiful to look at and romantically located. The castle-like villa was built in the middle of the Lenneberg Forest between 1908 and 1910 on behalf of Baron Martin Wilhelm von Waldthausen in the style of a Hohenstaufen palace building with a square tower resembling a keep. The builder was a captain of a hussar regiment stationed in Mainz and came from a respected patrician and industrial family from Essen.

Since the end of 1982, the entire property has belonged to the Rhineland-Palatinate Savings Banks and Giro Association, which, after renovation, operated the Rhineland-Palatinate Savings Bank Academy as an education and meeting center. Unfortunately, the castle and all adjacent buildings have been empty for several years. The gardens and parks are freely accessible, and concerts and other public events are sometimes held in the villa itself.

The Protestant castle church, formerly St. Wigbert's, is part of one of the best-preserved church fortifications in southern and western Germany. The Romanesque church tower from the early 12th century, with its late Gothic battlements and oriel turret, dominates the three-aisled church building. Its varying roof heights also reflect the various construction phases of the first half of the 15th century. The fortified west front with its large tracery window was completed in 1450.

Inside, the choir still contains many elements of the pre-Reformation period. A colorful stained glass window depicts the Adoration of the Magi, the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, and saints. It is a unique example of stained glass on the Middle Rhine around 1400. The late Gothic vaults are decorated with magnificent keystones and painted floral ornaments.

Many tombstones testify to the wealth, influence, and self-confidence of the former local aristocratic families. The facade of a silent organ with rich carvings dates back to the 18th century.

The keep has been preserved and can be climbed. The upper (narrow) section is a bit dark, but the climb is worth it!
