This area in the southeast of Santa Rosa Island contains the Torrey Pine, the rarest pine tree in the United States, if not the entire world. The tree only grows in one other place in mainland California. This area is the oldest known collection of the trees, and is heavily protected by the parks department.

The Cherry Canyon Trail offers an ideal route for a scenic jog that winds through the lowland hills of Santa Rosa Island. The canyon takes its name from the abundance of red flowering plants that grow in the area. During spring and early summer, these flowers blossom in a breathtaking display of deep cherry red colors.

The Santa Rosa Island Ferry runs from April to November and operates between 2 and 4 days a week. The ferry takes around 3 hours to reach the island from the mainland. Visitors must climb a steel ladder when exiting the ferry to the docks. When the docks are closed, a small boat will deliver visitors directly to the beach.

Nice trail for running that provides exceptional ocean views of the surrounding waters of Santa Cruz Island. I'd recommend heading down Smugglers Road rather than climbing up it, that way you don't miss out on the scenery.

This is a lovely trail that follows the coastline of the northern side of Santa Cruz Island. There's a nice bit of elevation gain to get you onto the trail, and then it evens out from there. The surface is compact dirt and can be rocky in places, so mind your footing. You can enjoy exceptional views across the blue ocean toward the mainland, as well as fantastic mountain views to the south across the island. At the end of the trail is also Potato Harbor, a glistening cove and one of the island's must-visits.

This is the main dock on and off of Santa Cruz Island. The trip from the mainland takes about an hour, and the boats are operated between 5-7 days a week. From the boat, visitors need to climb up a steel ladder in order to access the dock. When the dock is closed, a smaller boat will shuttle visitors directly to the beach. Nearby there are picnic areas, public restrooms, trailheads, and campgrounds. There is no form of transportation on the island, so it is by foot only.

For those seeking a challenge, Santa Cruz Island offers more extensive options. The Scorpion Canyon Loop Trail run via Smugglers Road is a moderate 4.4 miles (7.0 km) path with varied inland scenery and significant elevation changes. For a truly strenuous experience, consider the 7.5-mile roundtrip to Smugglers Cove on Santa Cruz Island, which provides a comprehensive taste of the island's diverse terrain.
Absolutely. Many trails in Channel Islands National Park are designed as loops, allowing you to experience varied scenery without repeating views. Examples include the Anacapa Island loop and the Cherry Canyon & Airstrip Road loop on Santa Rosa Island.

Many routes lead to stunning viewpoints like Cavern Point and Inspiration Point on Anacapa Island. The Channel Islands offer pleasant conditions for jogging year-round, but late winter and spring are particularly beautiful. During this time, many areas, like the hills of Anacapa Island, are painted with wildflowers, enhancing the running experience. The weather is generally mild, making it ideal for outdoor activities.
The Channel Islands are home to unique species that evolved in isolation. While running, you might spot the endemic island fox or the island scrub-jay. From coastal trails, marine wildlife such as seals, sea lions, dolphins, and various whale species can often be seen. Remember to observe wildlife from a respectful distance.
Access to the Channel Islands is primarily by park concessionaire boats or private boat. Island Packers provides boat transportation from Ventura and Oxnard harbors to all five islands. For detailed schedules and reservations, it's best to check their official website or the National Park Service website for planning your visit.

The running routes in Channel Islands National Park are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.5 stars from 4 reviews. Runners often praise the unparalleled natural beauty, the diverse terrain, and the tranquil escape from urban life that the islands provide.
Given the park's remote nature and limited access, most trails offer a sense of seclusion compared to mainland parks. To find even quieter spots, consider visiting during off-peak seasons or exploring trails on the less frequently visited islands like San Miguel or Santa Rosa, which offer longer and more strenuous options away from the main visitor hubs.
