Hiking

Embark on the Snake Bight and Rowdy Bend Trail Loop, a moderate 7.5 miles (12.1 km) hike through the diverse landscapes of Everglades National Park. You will experience tropical hardwood hammocks, coastal prairies, and mangrove shorelines, with a minimal elevation gain of just 1 feet (0 metres). This route offers a varied journey, taking approximately 3 hours and 2 minutes to complete.

Before you head out, be sure to prepare for mosquitoes, especially during warmer months; long clothing, a hat with a mosquito net, and gloves are highly recommended. It is also wise to check with a park ranger at the Flamingo Visitor Center for current trail conditions, as the Rowdy Bend Trail can sometimes be overgrown or flooded.

This loop combines two distinct trails, providing a unique perspective on the Everglades. The Snake Bight Trail leads to a boardwalk offering sweeping views of Snake Bight, an excellent spot for birdwatching. On the more rugged Rowdy Bend Trail, you can immerse yourself in a wilder side of the park, with opportunities to spot wading birds, alligators, and even crocodiles in the canals.

Snake Bight Trail Scenic Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The boardwalk at the end of this trail is a good place to see birds and other wildlife if you come at the right time of the day.
I read that the "bight" in the name Snake Bight trail actually means bay. It is a clever play on words. With that said, I would still watch out for snakes because this is the Everglades!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the overall difficulty of the Snake Bight and Rowdy Bend Trail Loop?

The overall difficulty of this loop is considered moderate to challenging. While the Snake Bight Trail section is generally easy with a wide, pleasant path, the Rowdy Bend Trail is rugged, unmaintained, and can be overgrown or muddy, especially during the wet season. Hikers should be prepared for a more 'wild' Everglades experience on the Rowdy Bend portion.

What kind of terrain will I encounter on the loop?

The loop offers diverse terrain. The Snake Bight Trail is a wide, straight path that transitions from tropical forest to coastal prairie, leading to a boardwalk. The Rowdy Bend Trail, however, is a former roadbed that is now narrow, overgrown, and can feature thick vegetation, mud, and standing water. Some sections may even be difficult to navigate or appear to disappear.

What wildlife and scenery can I expect to see?

You'll experience a variety of Everglades landscapes, including tropical hardwood hammocks, coastal prairie, and mangrove shorelines. The area is a renowned birdwatching hotspot, especially at the Snake Bight Trail Scenic Viewpoint, where you can spot wading birds like egrets, herons, ibis, and spoonbills. Alligators and occasionally crocodiles can be seen in canals, and the Rowdy Bend Trail is also excellent for birdwatching.

What are the entrance requirements for Everglades National Park?

The Snake Bight and Rowdy Bend Trail Loop is located within Everglades National Park. Therefore, you will need to pay an entrance fee to access the park. Pets are typically only allowed in developed areas like campgrounds, parking lots, and on roads. Always check the latest pet regulations on the NPS website before visiting.

What is the best time of year to hike this loop?

The best time to hike this loop is during the dry season, typically from November to April. During this period, temperatures are cooler, humidity is lower, and mosquitoes are less prevalent. The wet season (May to October) brings high heat, humidity, and a significant increase in mosquitoes, making the hike much more challenging and less enjoyable.

What should I know about mosquitoes on this trail?

It is highly recommended to wear long clothing, a hat with a mosquito net, and gloves for adequate protection. Consider checking with a park ranger for current mosquito conditions before your hike.
