Cycling

The classic cycle path in the Upper Palatinate Forest takes you over around 90 kilometers from Luhe-Wildenau to the gates of Regensburg - mostly along the natural course of the Naab. Probably the most striking feature are the numerous castles along the route, for example Lengenfeld Castle or the Kallmünz castle ruins. This cycle path is only difficult because of its overall length. If you don't want to cycle the entire route in one day, you can stop for the night in Schwandorf, for example.

Historic towns on the Naab also make this tour a cultural highlight. In Nabburg, for example, the medieval old town is almost completely preserved and worth a visit. During a short trip to the Oberpfälzer Freilandmuseum Neusath-Perschen you can learn a lot about rural work and life in times gone by. In the district town of Schwandorf, numerous tours, such as those through the historic rock cellars, offer interesting insights into the city on the river. However, you can unwind in the Bulmare wellness pool - your well-deserved relaxation opportunity awaits you in the beautiful sauna area.

Numerous places along the Naab can be reached by train - so nothing stands in the way of an uncomplicated arrival and departure.

Historic Old Town of Nabburg

Highlight • Historical Site

The beautiful town of Nabburg with its city walls and the tower of St. John's Church can be seen from far away. A visit to the old town is worthwhile; there is a lovely walk along the wall, lovely cafes and beautifully decorated historic houses.

Open-Air Museum Upper Palatinate

Highlight • Historical Site

The Upper Palatinate Open-Air Museum showcases old farms from the Upper Palatinate, the Bavarian Forest, and the Stiftland region. It keeps traditional domestic animal breeds and showcases rural life. It's worth a visit in the summer, as there are various events, such as the horse market, the traditional harvesting of the carp ponds at the mill, the museum's church fair, and much more.

Historic rock cellars

Highlight • Cave

The historic rock cellars in Schwandorf are the largest of their kind in Bavaria. Over a total length of more than one kilometer there are partly multi-storey rock cellars. During a guided tour you can take a look at the 500-year history of the cellar labyrinth. Various events such as concerts or readings also take place in this special ambience.

Bulmare Wellness Pool

Highlight • Rest Area

If you still want to treat yourself to something good after the bike tour, you are in the right place: sports, adventure and outdoor pools as well as the giant slide and the attached outdoor pool promise variety and bathing fun. And in the various saunas (the beer cellar sauna, the Finnish sauna or the garden sauna are just a few examples) you can regenerate wonderfully.

Kallmünz marketplace

Highlight • Settlement

An idyllic place with art galleries, beer gardens and narrow streets and a number of sights such as Brunntor, "Haus im Berg" and Steinerne Brücke. There is also ice cream! Unfortunately for racing cyclists a lot of plaster. You can also sit down on the banks of the Naab in front of the market administration, but you can also stroll in the direction of the Brunntor an der Naab and take a break on the benches. There are plenty of places to stop for refreshments, from pizza to cafés to beer gardens.

In the north-east of the village there is a youth campground, which is also accessible to families, located directly on the Naab. But you have to register with the groundskeeper beforehand (google for "Zeltplatz Zaar Markt Kallmünz").

In summer, the paragliders, which start from the Schloßberg, are always an eye-catcher. The thermals are obviously quite favorable here and even allow the gliders to rise above the castle.

Kallmünz also has a lot to offer for athletes: the Kallmünz Spring Run and the Sparkasse Triathlon are great events every year, which are organized by the clubs in the very active community.

May 22, 2023,Naabtal-Radweg 😍 Etzenricht ➡️ Sinzing (Opf.-Tour Tag 3/Finale 🏁)
>> Monday, 22.05. <<

Today was the third and last part of my Upper Palatinate round trip.

The journey started from Etzenricht first along the Haidenaab.

After only a few km it flows into the Naab near Unterwildenau and I then followed this course of the river down to Testing (Regensburg), where it then flows into the Danube.

This tour is part of my collection "The Danube and its tributaries"

Actually there is no Naabquelle. It only arises through the confluence of the Waldnaab and Haidennaab near Wildenau.

I had originally planned this point as a starting point. In terms of transport and accommodation, I then decided on Weiden in der Oberpfalz (Seltmann Weiden, Witt Weiden) and that …

Today I rode the Naabradweg from Regensburg to Weiden with Walter. Constant headwinds at a maximum of 10 degrees didn't make it easy. The highlight was the stop in Rothenstadt at Schinderhannes. Prices like 5 years ago with perfect quality. We then went back by train

🇬🇧 Day 5 of our first stage after Munich took us to Bad Abbach an der Donau today. 🚴🏻‍♂️😀. Beautiful route on the Waldnaab / Naab / Donau - drove together with Lothar and Reinhard 👍 Thanks to the two for helping to fix my first flat tire 🙂. Tomorrow we go to Munich 🍻. Have a nice evening 😎.

From Weiden today we continued down the Naab to where it flows into the Danube. Worth seeing: Kallmünz, but today it was completely overcrowded for Whitsun Sunday. Two thunderstorms, a lot of headwind, but also a lot of sun, especially in the evening, so today we spent the night in my favorite guesthouse again. With the permission of the ferryman, …
